Synopsis

Hugo's Lively Distractions Traveling Amusement cart rolls into Kingsbridge, the Royal City. The cart carries a traveling circus and fourteen year old Dessa Redd is the acrobat. Her good friend, Topper, a short, blue-skinned elf-like creature, is obsessed with robbing the good Queen of some of her wealth that she keeps locked up in one of the towers. Dessa's other friend is a large, purple-skinned one-headed ettin named Fisk.

Dessa is haunted by her memories of when her parents were killed and her brother taken from her by an evil man half of her life ago. She searches for this evil man in every town the circus visits hoping to someday be reunited with her brother.

While up on the high wire, Dessa keeps the crowd distracted while Topper picks the audiences' pockets. But when Dessa spies a man that looks like the guy who took her brother, she jumps down to the ground and confronts him, only to realize it is not him. Meanwhile, with no one to distract the audience, Topper is discovered trying to open a man's money pouch. Hugo, the circus leader, tells Dessa that she must come up with a way to feed the circus performers since Topper wasn't able to steal any money.

That evening, while wandering the streets trying to figure out a way to get some money, Dessa finds Fisk leaning against a building waiting for Topper. Topper has entered the tower through the small drain, which Fisk would never be able to fit through. When Topper lowers a rope to Fisk through an open window above, Dessa decides to join her two friend to keep them from doing anything really stupid, well, anything more stupid than robbing the Queen.

The Queen's treasury is well protected with many traps, but the three friends persist and finally make their way to the treasury, which is overflowing with coins and other precious items. Unfortunately for them, Captain Drake of the palace guards, notices Topper burning torch through a window in the tower and decides to investigate. What Dessa, Topper and Fisk do not realize is that the penalty for stealing from the Queen is death. To make matters worse, once they are captured by Captain Drake, Dessa realizes that the Queen's advisor is the man she has been searching for for half of her life, and now it is too late to do anything about it.

Review

Tower of Treasure is a fun fantasy, adventure book filled with interesting characters and tense situations. I found that I quite enjoyed this graphic novel and wanted to read more once I finished the book. I really liked all three of the main characters, although I am not quite sure what a two-headed ettin is, and was really hoping that they could successfully steal some money from that nasty old queen. Boy, is she ever a piece of work.

The pace of the story is quick and the storyline had quite a few twists and turns. I found myself to be quite interested in the story and read it all in one sitting. The artwork by Scott Chantler is excellent and I find it to be on par with some of the best comics produced. The coloring is well done and I like the glossy paper.

Topper reminds me of one of my favorite fantasy, comedy characters of all time: Aahz from the Myth books by Robert Asprin (and graphic novels drawn by Phil Foglio). Both are short, have pointed ears, exotically colored (although Aahz is green and scaly while Topper is blue), grumpy, and greedy as all get out. I didn't mind the similarity at all.

I'm not sure how many books are in this series, but I find that I really want to read the next book. I need to know whether Dessa is going to find her brother. And if she does find her brother, will he be good or evil? Only time will tell . . .

Overall, Tower of Treasure is a great graphic novel and will please any lover of fantasy or comic books. Scott Chantler has created a story that I could read again and again and I look forward to reading more adventures with Dessa, Topper and Fisk in The Sign of the Black Rock, book two of the Three Thieves series.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
