"Wait!" Scamp cried.

He started to run after Pug, but Dannika's hand on his shoulder stopped him.

Her other hand reached out into the air, as if she could feel what lay hidden behind the greenery. Her eyes widened.

"Get back!"

"What?" Mather asked. "Why?"

"Just run!"

Before she could finish, something erupted from the brush. A great dog--a mastiff or dane nearly tall enough to reach Scamp's shoulder--burst from the bushes. It was black on black with a coat so glossy it shimmered in even the dim light of the forest. The only color on its entire body was two strange point of red light--its eyes.

The buzzing had grown so loud it was almost like a voice, but there was no other sound, no snarling or barking, so it took Scamp a moment to realize that the dog was attacking.

"Look out!" Mather shouted as the beast leaped for Dannika.

She sprinted behind a tree for cover and darted out the other side just long enough to swing her willow staff in a great arc toward the dog. The wooden blur impacted squarely on the side of its head, just below the ear.

Bit of the dog flaked off, filling the air like dust. The staff sank into the dog's head as if it were water.

"What is that thing?"

In answer Mather charged the beast's flank. He held the axe over his head, then chopped down using all his strength. The bladed wedge hit the dog's rump right where its spine would have ended--only the axe did not bite into flesh. Instead, the whole rear of the dog exploded into a swarm of frenzied flying insects. The swarm swelled outward in a furious cloud.

The front quarters of the dog stumbled, having lost its rear legs. The creature snarled, baring crickets and black wasps instead of teeth.

"It's made of bugs!" Scamp exclaimed.

Mather staggered back as the cloud of insects swirled, turning in on itself, and reformed the hindquarters of the dog. Once again whole, the swarm dog turned on its prey. Not knowing what else to do, Mather ran. The creature sprinted after him.

Synopsis

Scamp always finds himself on the run from some local bullies. One day, when he is chased into the forest by those same bullies, Scamp hides in the Bristly Briar, his favorite hiding spot. Just as Scamp is thinking that he is safe, a mature green dragon tumbles out of the sky and lands on part of the Bristly Briar. Scamp is shocked by the devastation the dead dragon made. A huge bronze dragon with human dragonslayers in her back hovers of the briar. While escaping the destruction, Scamp finds a wooden chest. Believing that the dragonslayers are looking for this item, Scamp scurries back home.

Upon his return to the village, Tarban, Scamp spots his best  friend, Dannika Shellkeep. He gathers Dannika and Mather, his older brother, together and shows them the chest. Mather, believing that Scamp has stolen the chest, demands that it be returned. When Scamp insists that he didn't steal it and that he is willing to return it to its owner if they open it, Dannika suggests that they take the chest to her instructor, Peda.

Peda is a halfbreed monk, part human druid and part Kagonesti elf. Peda is a hermit that has been training Dannika in the ways of peace and magic. They show Peda the chest. Scamp tells Peda about the dead green dragon, the dragonslayers, and bronze dragon that killed the green. Peda tells the children that there is something evil in the chest and they should not open it. Peda is finally able to open the chest, at the children's insistence, and inside they find a stone globe and a tablet. Seeing the strange writing on the tablet, Peda retains the tablet and tells the children to go back home and never speak of the chest again.

Patima is working with dragonslayers from Tarsis and a Black Robe, a wizard of Nuitari. Patima is a bronze dragon that lost her entire family in the War of the Lance. She blames all evil chromatic dragons and she helped to kill the green dragon that fell on the Bristly Briar that almost squashed Scamp. Her revenge blinds her to what she is doing, and she watches as the Black Robe stops at nothing to get what he desires . . . power over all.

When the Black Robe finds Peda, Peda uses his magic to send the tablet away. Scamp, Dannika and Mather return to Peda's house the next day to find his charred remains. Leaving behind a magical message for Dannika, he tells them that the beings seeking the chest will stop at nothing to get what is inside. He then tells them to head south and east until they find the home of newborm magic that floats upon the sea. There, they will learn the deeper truth. He warns the children that if the Black Robe get what is in the chest, his revenge will know no limits and the children they will be killed if they are caught.

While on their journey, the stone globe breaks apart and a baby green dragon hatches. Scamp instantly bonds with the wyrmling and claims that it is not evil, like all green dragons are, and names the little dragon Pug. Anden Tillis, an adventurer, joins the group as they head south.

Their only hope that they can reach their destination before the Black Robe and the bronze dragon catch up to them. They know that they will not be able to stand up to an evil mage and full grown bronze dragon.

Green Dragon Codex is the stand-alone fantasy book and is written by Clint Johnson as R.D. Henham. This is the fifth book in the Dragon Codex series, a companion series to the book A Practical Guide to Dragons. This book is intended for young readers 10 and up.

Review

Green Dragon Codex is another fun book in the Dragon Codex series. I quite enjoyed Scamp's quest and found him to be a highly likable character. I  didn't like that Mather never stuck up for his younger brother and let him get beat up by bullies. What kind of older brother is that? Not a good one, I say.

The main issue I had with this book it that the green dragon, Pug, is very young. He is just a baby. You never really get to know anything about green dragons except that they are evil and expel a poisonous gas from their mouth when they attack. I found myself wanting to know more about green dragons, but that never really happened, as Pug was too young to talk. Bummer.

The story is good and highly entertaining. Clint Johnson does a fine bit of storytelling, and young readers will really get a kick out of this book. The pace of the story is swift and the action is plentiful. My only wish is that we could have gotten to know more about green dragons. I found myself thinking that the book was more about the bronze dragon, Patima, than the baby green dragon.

Overall, Green Dragon Codex is a good fantasy tale that left me wanting a little more. It is my least favorite of the Dragon Codex books, but it is still a first-rate story. Maybe the next book will focus more on the silver dragon that the story is supposed to be about. I guess I will just have to keep my fingers crossed when I read Silver Dragon Codex.

I rated this book a 7½ out of 10.
