The dragon was still weeping.

This made Tatelyn even angrier. "Stop it!" Tatelyn yelled. "How dare you cry. I'm the one who should by crying! My brother was killed by a copper dragon like you!"

The dragon's tears slowed and it glared at Tatelyn. "I am not copper! I'm bronze! The very idea! Copper dragons live in the mountains, and eat scorpions, and bre--"

"I don't care! You're a dragon!" Tatelyn sat down on the rocks. "Oh, why did you have to come here? Why can't you all just go away and leave us alone?"

"I would like nothing better!" the dragon roared. "I hate it here!"

Tatelyn blinked, startled.

"I want to go back to the Dragon Isles," the dragon continued, sitting up proudly. "I never wanted to come here, but my parents made me."

Dragons had parents? The thought had never occurred to Tatelyn, but of course, they must have. Where else would little dragons come from? Then another thought crossed her mind, far more chilling. What if the dragon's parents were around here as well?

"Wh-where are your parents?" Tatelyn asked, trying to keep the question casual.

Tears welled up in the dragon's eyes again. "My mother was wounded in a fight. Fighting to protect humans! To protect you!"

"Don't cry again! You'll eat away the whole ledge!" Tatelyn said. She couldn't get any farther away, so instead she leaped up to rush toward the dragon, but she tripped and avoided falling in a puddle of acidic tears by inches. "A dragon never protected me! Never!"

"Then where did you get that necklace?" the dragon asked, pointing a finger at Tatelyn's neck. Tatelyn looked down and picked up the medallion of Mishakal. "Not that one," the dragon snapped. "The jewel. The one that matches this!"

Simle flipped her head to the side and a fine chain, previously tucked behind the dragon's wings, was a pendant that matched the one Elistan had given to Tatelyn.

"Where did you get that?" Tatelyn rose to her feet and took a step forward, her curiosity outweighing her fear of the dragon for the moment.

"My mother brought it home after protecting humans. You must have seen her if you have the other half."

The other half? Tatelyn looked closer and realized that, indeed, then pendant would fit together with hers. She shook her head slowly. "You are the first copper dragon I've seen since--"

"How many times must I tell you, I am not copper, I'm BRONZE!" With the last word, the dragon flapped her wings.

"You're going to kill us both!" Tatelyn yelled. She edged away until her back was against the steep rock wall, and glanced up. Only a gifted climber could scale that. Her rage at being kidnapped, at dragons, at everything that has happened in the last few days bubbled up again. "I don't care what metal you are!" she shouted. "I didn't get this from a dragon. I haven't seen a dragon other than you for a year! And, may I say, it wasn't a good encounter then, either."

The dragon's raised wings dropped like a yellow flower wilting in the sun. "You didn't see my mother?" it whispered.

"No," Tatelyn said, feeling slightly sorry for the dragon. She beat the feeling down. But curiosity about the similar jewel won out over her anger for a moment. "May I look closer at the necklace?"

The dragon said nothing, but merely nodded. Tatelyn came closer, closer. What if it was a trap? But the dragon could have killed her by now, she realized, if that was its purpose. It must have been genuinely curious about her necklace.

Tatelyn took the dragon's pendant in one hand. Like hers it was jagged along one edge. She took her pendant in the other hand and fitted them together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

For a moment, she saw the completed star that the two pieced made. Then there was a brilliant flash of multicolored light and a roaring boom that shook rocks loose from the cliff. Tatelyn let go of the dragon's necklace as the force from the flash knocked her back into the scraggly tree, where she ducked for cover. Simle tucked her head and wings in until she resembled a ball.

The two waited for the rain of rocks to cease, then they peered at each other. That crafty dragon had done something, using the matching jewel as bait.

"What did you do?" Tatelyn shouted. A stray rock bounced down the cliff. Tatelyn ducked aside and it continued its fall down the mountain. "What did you do?"

"What did I do?" The dragon stood, craning her long neck to look at the new formations in te rock above them. "What did you do?"

Synopsis

In 287 AC, Simle is a very young bronze dragon living on the Dragon Isles with her parents. Two humans creep into their cave, distract Simle with a magical spell on a rock, and steal the five eggs that have not hatched yet. When Simle's parents awaken and find the eggs gone, Simle decides right then and there that she will always hate humans for stealing her unhatched brothers and sisters.

In 356 AC, 69 years later, Simle and her parents now live in Solamnia and Simle's mother is injured by a black dragon. Simle's father and mother were protecting some clerics who were on a pilgrimage. One of the clerics gave a pendant to Simle's mother, who in turn gives it to Simle when she returns to their cave. Simle, upset that her mother has been hurt, sneaks off to find the humans that her mother and father were protecting to make them pay.

Tatelyn is leader of the Heirs of Huma. A year ago, a copper dragon that was being controlled by a wizard and attacked her town of Forestedge and her brother was killed. She gathered her friends together and started a movement that demands that all dragon, whether their are the evil chromatic dragons or the good metallic dragons, leave the lands of Krynn forever. With the help of Rogan, a knight, Rogan sister Ramma, who is a wizard, and Elrit, a half-elf half-human, they go from town to town looking for new recruits.

After a dreadful attempt at recruiting in Palanthas, the Heirs of Huma head south towards Forestedge. Simle is flying over the forest and it attacked by Tatelyn's friends. Simle lands near Tatelyn and carts her off to a cave high in the mountains. After a brief talk, and both finding out that they hate each other's species, Simle asks about the pendant Tatelyn is wearing. Tatelyn explains that it was given to her by Elistan, the high cleric, in Palanthas. It looks just like the one Simle is wearing. When Tatelyn puts the two halves of the pendant together, something magical happens. Each of them now feels what the other is feeling. When Simle bumps her head on a ledge, Tatelyn screams out in pain as her head hurts. When Tatelyn falls down and scrapes up her hands, Simle's hands hurt.

Knowing that they must somehow get this spell reversed, they decided to head back to Palanthas and ask Elistan about the pendant. All they know is that it used to belong to Huma. But on their way north, Tatelyn is kidnapped by draconians who are intent upon attacking the town of Mountainhome. Knowing she must somehow rescue Tatelyn, Simle is at a loss, since she is still a pretty young bronze dragon, as how to go about it. She wonders what will happen if the draconians kill Tatelyn. Will she die also?

Bronze Dragon Codex is a stand-alone fantasy book and is written by Amie Rose Rotruck as R.D. Henham. This is the second book in the Dragon Codex series, a companion series to the book A Practical Guide to Dragons. This book is intended for young readers 10 and up.

Review

Bronze Dragon Codex is not the type of story I expected. That is not a bad thing, as it turns out, because I was extremely happy with the story. What I didn't expect was a story about a young bronze dragon with her hated of humans. I also didn't expect a story about a young human cleric out to rid the land of all dragons because of her hated for them. This was all unexpected . . . and turned out to be a very exciting fantasy romp.

I loved that the two main characters, a female cleric, Tatelyn, and a young bronze dragon, Simle, are linked together by an enchanted pendant. When the two halves of the pendant were placed together, the feelings and the energy of the two were exchanged. Every time Tatelyn's body was hurt, she didn't feel a thing, but Simle did. Spending time together, getting to know each other, really helped change the ideas that these two had about each other. Their prejudices towards each other's species was based upon ignorance. Once the ignorance was washed away with knowledge, they both would come to realize that they could actually become friends and really likes each other.

I love that the story was about a young bronze dragon . . . well, young in dragon years. I found Simle to be a highly enjoyable character to read about. I don't know what it is about dragons that causes me to like them so much. I just like 'em. They are big, strong, smart (well, some of them are), and look so cool. Makes me wish I was a dragon.

As for the other main character, Tatelyn, I understand why she was so angry. After all, her brother was killed by a copper dragon. Even though she knows that an evil wizard was controlling the copper dragon, she still blames the dragon. Sometimes it is easier to blame bad things on something you don't understand, like a dragon, rather than on something you do, like a human wizard. I am glad that she was finally able to figure things out.

Bronze Dragon Codex is the first published novel by Amie Rose Rotruck. She does a great job with character development and the pace of the story is nice and quick. With witty dialog and and interesting characters, this second book, in the Dragon codex series, is a winner.

Overall, Bronze Dragon Codex is an excellent book and a nice addition to the Dragon Codex series. So, if you are a lover of epic fantasy tales with adventure, fighting, and magic, pick up a copy of any book in the Dragon Codex series. I wonder what exciting adventure awaits in the next book in this series, Black Dragon Codex. At least I know that the dragon will be evil next time.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
