A Kender Exploring a Cave . . .

Pip ran off while Keene explored. To his disappointment, there was nothing to see. No snow monsters, only gray, stony walls. Keene turned to leave. He took the last bite of his apple, tossed it over his shoulder, then pulled out a strip of dried venison to munch.

When he stepped out of the cave, Keene saw Pip and Jirah racing toward him. "Pip was right," Keene yelled. "There was nothing interesting in there."

Jirah's eyes widened, her mouth dropped open, and she pointed at him, yelling something. Her voice was carried by the wind so that Keene couldn't make out her words.

A warm blast that smelled like stinky fish buffeted Keene's neck. Bad breath. Worse than old pirate Black Teeth's breath. Keene was about to tell the owner of the fishy breath to please be polite and step back, but a cold, wet something jabbed his neck.

"Didn't your mother teach you manners?" Keene said as he turned to se a very, very large white bear. "Hey, Jirah, look! It's an icebear." The bear yawned, revealing a lot of very, very sharp fangs with bits of apple core sticking to them. "Are you hungry, fella?'

The icebear opened its mouth wider, making a loud noise that sounded like "Bawwwl. Bawwwl." Then it swung its head back and forth in front of Keene while its wet black nostrils quivered in rapid sniffs.

Keene wondered if he smelled better to the icebear than the icebear smelled to him. The icebear slid its eel-like tongue over its extraordinarily large muzzle. The strip of venison hung limply in Keene's hand. His stomach soured and he could barely chew the bit of venison in his mouth as he remembered what Bem had told him. He had said, "Watch out for icebears. Captain Nine Lives said they will attack anything that crosses their path, including people."

Keene noticed the icebear's huge paw came equipped with five dagger-sharp claws. He knew if he tried to run, the bear would only slap him down. Keene tightened his grip on the venison, shoved it into the icebear's mouth, grabbed hold of the icebear's neck, and swung himself upon its back.

By now, Icefire, Davyn, and Nearra had caught up to Jirah. They stared in horror as the icebear twisted and turned and bawled, trying to throw Keene off its back. Keene clutched the icebear's fur as his backside flew up, then slammed down. He laughed and whooped and said, "Hey, look at me! I'm Keene Bearrider."

Review

It has been three hundred year that Nearra's family has been barren of magic. One of her ancestors, a wizard, betrayed another wizard to the evil god Hiddukel. A curse was put upon her family that none of them could ever wield magic. She is convinced that she can break the curse hat has been thrown upon her family, for inside her are the magical powers of Asvoria. With some of her new-found friends at her side and some of her old companions, Nearra begins a journey to find and release the ancient wizard's sprit. But Nearra's sister, Jirah, who is in contact with the evil Janeesa, wants to break the spell herself. Jirah is also jealous because of the attention Icefire pays to Nearra. Making a deal with Janeesa, Jirah has vowed to kill her sister before Nearra can attempt to break the curse. Jirah has become convinced by Janeesa that it is the only way she shall become a wizard, even if it means she shall have to wear black robes.

Wizard's Curse is the first book of three in the DragonLance: The New Adventures Trinistyr Trilogy and is written by Christina Woods. It is a young adult fantasy story that takes place in the DragonLance universe and is intended for readers ages 10 and up. This story has the following main characters: Nearra - a female teenage who has the powers of Asvoria locked deep within her, Davyn - a human, male teenage ranger, Keene - a kender, Pip - Keene's little dog, Jirah - Nearra's 13-year old sister, Icefire Fallabrine - a male elf, Janeesa - a evil female wizard, and Tylari - Janeesa's sidekick.

Wizard's Curse is a new Dragonlace: The New Adventures story that takes place right after Dragon Spell, the last of the eight books in the original series about Nearra and Asvoria. It has some of the old characters from the original series and some new ones too. There were hints in the original series that Jirah was up to something, always looking and talking into a magical mirror, and this is finally explained in Wizard's Curse. But what I did not like about this book was the personality changes in both Jirah and Davyn from the original series. It's like the author, Christina Woods, did not read the original eight books and did not really get to know these characters before she penned this one. Other than that one flaw, the story is fun and interesting and I quite enjoyed reading more about Nearra and her adventures. Overall, Wizard's Curse by Christina Woods is a good fantasy tale that opens the door to a trilogy that hold a lot of promise. I look forward to seeing what happens in Volume Two: Wizard's Betrayal by Jeff Sampson.

I rated this book a 7 out of 10.
