In the Country of
Tokyo (Shifting Sands), Fai lays dying with an eye that was torn out by
the fake Syaoran. Subaru makes a deal with the Space-Time Witch, Yûku,
that to get the water supply back that he will give some his vampire
blood to Fai. This will cause Fai to heal quickly. Also, Kurogane agrees
to be the only one that Fai will drink blood from, as he will now be a
vampire. But without his missing eye, Fai will not be able to use his
magic. If Fai does retrieve his missing eye, Kurogane will no longer
have to be Fai's "game." When Fai received the vampire blood, his body
begins to change and it was quite painful. Fûma shows up with one of Sukura's
memory feathers inside a container that Mokona's senses cannot
penetrate. Fûma wants to bring all of his people to this tower because
they are almost out of water in their tower. Sakura awakens and since
Mokona cannot sense the feather, she decides that she doesn't need the
feather and will just lose whatever memory the feather contains. After
Yûku fills the tower reservoir with water, she calls upon Kurogane to
perform a task. Sukura, feeling guilty for all that has happened in this
country, demands that she perform the task, not Kurogane. She is to
retrieve something for Yûku and has to do it alone. As she struggles to
survive the giant, mutated creatures that inhabit the Shifting Sands,
Fai awakens. Fai freaks out when he learns that Sukura is facing the
danger so this world alone, and for him.

Tsubasa:
RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 17
is still taking place on the world of Shifting Sands. I realize that
things are changing for our heroes; with Fai missing an eye, the real Syaoran
showing up, and Fai turning into a vampire, but I miss the adventure of
them jumping from world to world looking for Sakura's memory feathers. I
am so ready for them to jump to a different world that it is driving me
crazy. I think we are finally getting close and it should happen in the
next book and I am keeping my fingers crossed. But this whole vampire
storyline is not as interesting as the previous storylines. As for this
story, it is well-written, just not very exciting. The artwork, as
usual, is awesome and every page is a joy to absorb. But I want to get
back to the type of stories that made Tsubasa my favorite manga series.
So, now it looks like the guys will not only be chasing after Sukura's
feather, they will also be looking for Fai's missing eyes. That sure is
a lot of things to look for on multiple worlds. Okay, do I love this
series? Yes. Have they gotten a little off-track? Yes. Can Clamp get it
back on-track? Yes, I am sure of it. Overall, Tsubasa:
RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 17
is not the best of the books in this series, but the storyline is
changing, so I understand . . . I'm just not happy with it right now. I
sure hope that Mokona transports everyone to a new world in Tsubasa:
RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 18. We need more adventuring!
