In the Country of
Tokyo (Shifting Sands), Kamui has discovered Sakura's soul in the bottom
of the water reservoir that lies under their tower in the Tochô
Building. Mokona senses a memory feather and Syaoran is insistent that
the locals tell him how to get to the reservoir. When he arrives and
jumps into the water, Syaoran finds that Kamui is already there. They
begin to battle underwater and Kamui slices Syaoran across the neck,
causing him to bleed. When Kamui licks some of the blood from his
fingers, it is discovered that he is one of the Vampire Twins. When Syaoran
recovers, the battle continues. Meanwhile, the Space-Time Witch realizes
that the seal on Syaoran's eye is breaking. She admits that the Syaoran
in Tokyo is a man-made image of the real Syaoran who was sent to help
find and return all the memory feathers to Sakura. Back in the
reservoir, when Fai arrives, Kamui confronts Fai and asks him if he knew
about the fake Syaoran. Kamui tells Fai that the real Syaoran is coming.
As his power diminishes, the fake Syaoran attacks Fai when he realizes
that Fai's magic is in his eyes. He gouges out Fai's left eyes and
replaces his diminishing right eye, thereby giving himself Fai's magical
power. Kurogane arrives and protects the injured Fai while the real Syaoran
finally arrives. Facing off, the two Syaorans begin to battle. After
defeating the real Syaoran, the fake Syaoran promises to seek out and
return Sakura's memory feathers to her and magically leaves the country.
When Kurogane notices the symbol on the real Syaoran's chest, he
realizes that the symbol is the same one that was on the sword that
impaled his mother. With Fai almost dead from shock from losing an eye,
everyone hopes that there is a way to save him.

Tsubasa:
RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 16
is the first book in this series where I became a little confused during
the reading. The Syaoran we have been reading about in the previous 15
books is not the REAL Syaoran? Huh? Then he becomes evil? Double huh?
Then he steals one of Fai's eyes? Triple huh? It was all just a little
baffling. Of course, the artwork is excellent and the storyline is still
great, but it left me wondering exactly what was going on, as not everything
was explained. I am hoping that more will be revealed in future books as
to why this is all happening. Boy, things sure are changing in this
series. We don't know if the real Syaoran will be anything like the one
we have been reading about for the last few years. I sure hope he is,
because the fake Syaoran was my favorite character. Now that they have
retrieved Sukura's memory feather, I would guess that they will soon be
traveling to a new world. But with Fai near death, I am not sure when
that will be happening. Well, I guess I will have to grind my teeth and
wait for the next book. This is still one of my favorite manga series
that Del Rey publishes. Overall, Tsubasa:
RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 16
is another great book, if a little confusing, and I look forward to
more adventures across the parallel dimensions in
Tsubasa:
RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 17. Gee, I hope it is released soon.
