"You missed some treasure," Drizzt whispered.

The giant looked around again, its movements showed that it was more than a little interested. Not far to the side, one of its companions snored, coughed, and rolled over.

"I will share with you, fifty-fifty, and with your kin, if you believe we need them," Drizzt said. "But not with the orcs."

A wicked smile that crossed the giant's face told Drizzt that his understanding of the race relationships within the enemy band was not far from the mark.

"Let us continue this discussion, but not here," Drizzt said, and he began fading back into the shadows.

The giant looked around yet again, then moved into a crouch and crept after him, following eagerly into the night, moving quietly along a rocky trail to a small clearing protected behind by a sheer cliff wall.

On a ledge on that wall, some ten feet above the head of the towering giant, two sets of curious eyes looked on.

"What will Donnia Soldou think of this?" the giant asked.

"Donnia need not know," Drizzt replied.

The giant's shrug told him much, told him that Donnia, whoever she might be, was not an overriding controlling force, but more likely just an associate. That brought a bit of relief to the dark elf. He would hate to think that the orcs and the giants were acting at the behest of a drow army.

"I will take Geletha with me," the giant announced.

"Your friend with whom you were speaking?"

The giant nodded. "And we take two shares, you take one."

"That hardly seems fair."

"You cannot move the slab."

"You cannot find the slab." Drizzt continued to banter, trying hard to keep the giant unsuspicious while his friends moved into their final positions.

He figured he wouldn't have to keep it up for long.

When the blue-streaking arrow shot out from behind him, zipping past, and thudded hard into the giant's chest, the drow was not surprised.

The behemoth groaned, but was not badly hurt. Drizzt drew his scimitars and leaped around, turning to face Catti-brie's position, still playing the part of the giant's ally.

"Where did it come from?" he shouted. "Lift me that I might see."

"Straight ahead!" roared the great creature.

It started to bend to accommodate the drow, and Drizzt turned fast and ran up the treelike arm. His scimitars slashed hard across the behemoth's face, drawing bright lines of red.

Review

King Obould Many-Arrows, king of the orcs, has gathered together an army of orcs. Because of his pact with Dame Orelsdottr, the leader of the frost giant tribes of the Spine of the World, he also has a few of her frost giants. The king sends his son, Urlgen, to lead the army and begin raiding the human and dwarf towns of the North, taking no prisoners. Tred and Nikillig, two dwarves, survive an attack on their caravan by a party or orcs and flee into the woods. The dark elf, Drizzt Do'Urden, the human female, Catti-brie, her adopted dwarf parent, Bruenor (soon to be king of the dwarves at Mithral Hall), the barbarian, Wulfgar, and the halfling, Regis, travel with a group of dwarves toward Mithral Hall for the new king's coronation. But when they find Tred and Nikillig, Bruenor decides that they must kill the orcs that have taken dwarf lives. Bruenor sends the main brunt of his force on to Mithral Hall to warn them of the orc attacks and to get ready to defend the city. In their travels, they find a few towns that have been decimated by this band of orcs and giants and realize that they may have underestimated the number of enemies. Meanwhile, Ivan Bouldershoulder and his green-bearded brother, Pikel, a dwarf mage, get lost on the way to Mithral Hall but are found by two pegasus-riding moon elves, Tarathiel and Innovindil, who are intrigued by the magic ability of Pikel. The moon elves travel with the two dwarves and help them to find Mithral Hall. When Mithral Hall hears that their future king is trapped in a small town and is besieged by a thousand orcs, they gather their forces in hope that they can arrive in time to save their friends.

This is the first book in The Hunter's Blade Trilogy. This Forgotten Realms fantasy tale features R.A. Salvatore's signature character, Drizzt Do'Urden, the drow. This book is about the beginning of the orc invasion into the Northern territory. The orcs soon realize that they have the future king of the dwarves trapped and are determined that Bruener will not survive the attack, which will make the taking of Mithral Hall that much easier.

This is the seventh book I have read by R.A. Salvatore. Every one of those books I have enjoyed greatly. R.A. Salvatore writing flows like the waters of a raging river. Salvatore is excellent and both character and plot development, but his forte is in writing the action scenes which are well-described and non-stop. He continues this style of writing in the first book of the Hunter's Trilogy, The Thousand Orcs. I was happy that the book didn't take place in Menzoberranzan, but in the world above. The members of Drizzt's party are highly interesting, especially Bruener and Wulfgar. As for Drizzt, he is a very exciting character that really brings this story to life. This story is an excellent addition to the ever-growing collection of books in the Forgotten Realms world. So, if you are looking for the latest book in the Drizzt Do'Urden saga, pick up The Thousand Orcs. I just love reading about frenzied battledwarves, and I know you will too.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
