Review

Chocolat and Vanilla are 10-year old witch girls from the Magical World. They are in a contest to see who will be the next Queen of the Magical World. To determine the winner, the girls are competing to see who can win the most hearts. With their magic, they can see the emotions of a person and these emotions appear in the shape of a crystal heart. The type of emotion which color the heart will be. Each colored heart has a different value and some are worth quite a lot. Vanilla is shy and sweet and she takes the heart of a boy who generally likes her. On the other hand, Chocolat is temperamental and confrontational. She usually scares most boys away. Their guide through this journey is Rockin' Robin, a male witch that wins a ton of hearts being a singing heart throb. Akiko Mikado is a human boy that saw the girls enter his mundane world while looking through his telescope. He is convinced they are aliens and will do anything to prove it. Meanwhile, another person from the magical world has also been living on the human plane. He is Prince Pierre. He is an upperclassman and he wants to take both Chocolat's and Vanilla's hearts. The only problem is that becasue they are not human, they only have one heart to give. Since the witches only have one heart to give, if someone takes their heart, they will die.

Sugar Sugar Rune: Volume 1 is a manga book written and drawn by Moyoco Anno. This collection of six runes (1 - 6) was translated by Vayoi Ihne and adapted by Nunzio Defilippis & Christina Weir. This book contains the following runes (chapters):

Rune 1 - Chocolate, Hearts, and the Shooting Star

Rune 2 -  Heart of Chocolat, Heart of Vanilla

Rune 3 - Unscheduled Newspaper Club Interview

Rune 4 -  Christmas Party Romp!

Rune 5 - Feeling the Pink Heart (Part I)

Rune 6 - Feeling the Pink Heart (Part II)

There is also information About the Creator, Translation Notes, Honorifics Explained, and a Preview of Volume 2, although the preview is in Japanese. The book reads from right to left and back to front, just like a book from Japan. This manga book is intended for readers ages 10 and up.

This collections of six stories is fun and exciting. While most of the stories revolve around the ever-angry Chocolat, Vanilla adds a sense of sweetness to the pages. Moyoco Anno has created two enjoyable characters that young girls will love to read about. The artwork is great and the text flows well. This book is mostly about kids having crushes on other kids. Of course, there is the evil Prince Pierre in there to stir up trouble. Personally, I thought Rockin' Robin was a girl at first. He is drawn very feminine looking (as you can see above in the example of a page from the book). Overall, I took delight in reading this story about two little witches and their contest to steal the most hearts and become Queen of the Magical World. I look forward to seeing what other interesting adventures await Chocolat and Vanilla in Sugar Sugar Rune: Volume 2.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
