Catti-brie spun and ran on, . . .

. . . around the back side of the wide mound. She heard a roar from Guenhwyvar, followed by the profound screams of another group of goblins. Ahead, a huddled form was running away from her, and she lifted her bow, ready to clear the path.

Something jolted her on the hip. She released the bowstring, and the arrow zipped wide of the mark, scorching a hole in the wall.

Catti-brie stumbled off balance, startled and hurt. She banged her shin against a jutting stone and nearly pitched headlong, skidding to a stop down on one knee. As she reached down to get another arrow from her quiver, she felt the wet warmth of her lifeblood pouring generously from a deep gash in her hip. Only then did stunned Catte-brie realize the hot waves of agony.

She kept her wits about her and turned as she fitted the arrow.

The goblin was right above her, its breath coming hot and smelly through pointed yellow teeth. Its sword was high above its head.

Catti-brie let fly. The goblin jerked up into the air, but came back to its feet. Behind it, another goblin caught the arrow under the chin, the powerful bolt blowing the back of its skull off.

Catti-brie thought she was dead. How could she have missed? Did the arrow slip under the goblin's arm as it jumped in fright? It made no sense to her, but she could hardly stop to think it over. The moment of death was upon her, she was sure, for she could not maneuver her bow quickly enough to parry the goblin's next strike. She could not block the descending sword.

Review

Drizzt Do'Urden is feeling guilty for his friend, Wulfgar's, death. He decides that he must put a stop to the threat that hangs over his remaining friend's heads. He quietly leaves Mithril Hall behind heading for his old home deep down in drow territory, Menzoberranzan. Catti-brie, who has been mourning the loss of her fiancée, Wulfgar, notices that Drizzt is gone and scares the truth out of Regis. He gives her both Entreri's mask and dagger. She takes the cat figurine that will call forth Guenhwyvar and starts on the trail of Drizzt a few days after he left. As Drizzt battles his way down into the depths of the caverns toward Menzoberranzan, Catti-brie follows, but is more wary about the darkness. Luckily, she wears a charm that lets her see in the darkness and another that helps her track Drizzt. In Menzoberranzan, the drow mercenary, Jarlaxle, is working for Matron Baenre. He has retrieved a secret from the surface world that he will use against Drizzt. Matron Baenre is hatching a scheme to bring all of the great houses together so she can build up a force large enough to attack Mithril Hall and capture Drizzt. Little does she know that he is about to walk right into her hands and throw her future plans awry.

Starless Night is the second book in The Legacy of the Drow series. This Forgotten Realms fantasy tale features R.A. Salvatore's signature character, Drizzt Do'Urden, the dark elf. Other main characters in the story are: Bruenor - eighth King of the Mithral Hall, Catti-brie - the the human female and adopted daughter of Bruenor, Regis - the peace-loving ever hungry halfling, Thibbledorf Pwent - a smelly dwarf battlerager, Artemis Entreri - a human assassin who hates Drizzt, and Jarlaxle - a male drow mercenary.

R.A. Salvatore has done it again! Starless Night continues a storyline first started in The Legacy. Drizzt Do'Urden is an extremely cool character that I love reading about. Is he the perfect warrior that never makes a mistake? No . . . but that is what I like about him. He is fallible. He is the type of character that all fantasy lovers will feel a bond to right away. The action sequences in this book are exquisite. Nobody, and I mean nobody, write better battle scenes than R.A. Salvatore. His descriptions over every swing and thrust of Drizzt's scimitars are easily better than any other fantasy writer today. My only fault with the book is the cover. Catti-brie looks great. But who is the old-looking elf on the cover with the purplish skin. It can't be the 60-year old, but still young, ebon-skinned dark elf, Drizzt, can it? Either way, that really doesn't matter. It's not the cover that makes a good book, its the written words. Overall, Starless Night by R.A. Salvatore is an excellent addition to The Legacy of the Drow four-part series. I can't wait for the next.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.
