Outside the Entrance to the Dungeons of Doom

"All right, then," Kellach said, "have it your way. We'll put it to a vote."

"Fine!" Driskoll said. "All in favor of rushing into certain death to save the life of an old elf who might actually be dead already?"

Kellach raised his hand. Driskoll kept both hands down. The brothers looked at Moyra to break the tie.

"Did I ever tell you about my last birthday?" Moyra asked.

"What does that have to do with the vote?" Driskoll asked.

"My dad had been in prison for just over a month, and my mother was having trouble making ends meet. She wasn't even going to be able to bake a cake for me, she thought.

"That night, a knock came on the door, and I ran to open it. My father was standing there, a cake in one hand and a bag of coins in the other. We were so happy to see him, we didn't even ask how or why.

"At the end of the night, though, Dad told us that he had to go back to his cell. He had been granted one night of freedom, but only under the condition that he return the same night to finish out his sentence. Do you know who set him free?"

The boys both shook their heads.

"It was Zendric." Moyra raised her hand. "We're going in."

"This is beyond madness," Driskoll said as he followed Kellach and Moyra toward the stairwell. "I've heard a lot of stories about people going into this place, and not one of them ever turned out well."

"Zendric would go in after any of us," Kellach said. "We can hardly do less."

Driskoll saw the determination in Kellach and Moyra's eyes and let loose a deep sigh. "Let's get it over with."

"It'll be darker than a new moon down there," said Moyra. She dug into her pack and pulled out a couple of torches. She lit them both and handed one to Driskoll. Kellach lit the lantern they'd borrowed from Torin's closet.

The three friends nodded at each other, then walked down the long stairs into the dungeons. At the bottom of the stairwell, an open doorway beckoned, promising adventure beyond. Someone has scrawled out a sign and posted it over the door long ago.

"TURN BACK!" it read.

They walked past the sign without a word.

Review

In the town of Curston, Kellach is a young apprentice of the wizard, Zendric. Kellach gets angry with his master and Zendric tells him that he will no longer teach Kellach to be a wizard. Outside, Kellach's 12 year-old brother, Driskoll, awaits his brother. On the way home, they run into Moyra, the daughter of a thief and a friend of theirs. The next morning, when Kellach's returns to his master's home to see if he will be taken back as an apprentice, he discovers Zendric laying on the floor, nearly dead. Zendric's body is slowly dieing because his spirit had been stolen out of his body. The three youngsters gather some evidence and discover what has happened, but no one will believe them. When they notice that the globe that was on the mantle is missing, they figure out that it is a Spiritkeeper and it has stolen away Zendric's spirit. They soon begin to track down the thief and they soon find themselves standing in the ruins before the entrance to the Dungeon of Doom. Knowing that no one has ever returned from these dungeons unharmed, they make their way into the darkness to begin an adventure they will never forget.

Secret of the Spiritkeeper is the first book in the Knights of the Silver Dragon series and is written by Matt Forbeck. It is a young adult fantasy story that takes place in the Dungeon & Dragons universe and is intended for readers ages 9 and up. This story has the following main characters: Kellach - a 14-year old male teenage wizard's apprentice, Driskoll - Kellach's 12-year old brother who wants to learn to fight with a sword, and Moyra - a 13-year old female who has always lived the life of a thief. Together, they are the Knights of the Silver Dragon.

I have been looking forward to reading this book for a while. After all, it is the first Dungeons & Dragons book intended for Young Adults. Matt Forbeck does a great job of bringing this adventure to life. The story is quickly paced and the three main characters are highly likable. Young readers will enjoy this adventure in the highly loved universe of Dungeons & Dragons. There are a few black and white full-page images in the story to help the reader imagine what is going on. I would have liked to have had a few more to enhance the story. Overall, Secret of the Spiritkeeper is a great read for young readers who are looking for a real fantasy story. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Riddle in Stone by Ree Soesbee.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
