In the Town of Ravenscar in Front of the Pit

"Are you certain she'll help us?" Catriona whispered to Davyn.

"Ayanti and I grew up together," Davyn said. "My--the wizard didn't approve of a human and a centaur having a personal relationship. But we became friends anyway. She'll help us."

After a time, Ayanti returned, pulling a wagon with an iron cage in the back. Inside the cage was a strange beast that resembled a boar, though it was closer to the size of a bull. Instead of fur, it was covered in greenish-black scales, and it had long lizard-like tail. The beast snorted and rammed its curved tusks against the iron bars of its cage, impatient to be free.

Nearra was horrified. "Is that abomination Maddoc's doing?"

Davyn nodded. "That's how he pays Bolthor. Bolthor gets the wizard whatever supplies and servants he wants, and in return, the wizard uses his magic to create monsters to fight in the Pit. This one looks to be a cross between a boar and a lizard."

The beast slavered and whipped its tail about, eager to get to killing.

"It's disgusting!" Catriona said.

"I wonder what sort of spell Maddoc used to create the animal," Sindri said. "Do you think he might tell me?"

Ayanti pulled the wagon up to the ramp at the edge of the Pit and started to unlock the cage door. Though the centaur had showed affection for the wolves and the bear, it was clear from her expression that she held little love for the lizard-boar. Nearra couldn't blame her.

As soon as the door was open, the lizard-boar jumped onto the ramp and ran down into the Pit without any urging from Ayanti.

"What now?" Nearra asked.

Before anyone could say anything else, a shout came from edge of the crowd.

"Cheaters! Thieves!"

The crowd grew quiet, and turned to look at the cause of the commotion. The two bullies who had "greeted" the companions at the edge of town were pushing their way through, weapons drawn and faces twisted into masks of fury.

The crowd lost no time parting to make way for the angry thugs.

"I think perhaps it's time we were going," Elidor said nervously. But before any of them could move, Snake Skin saw them and jabbed his sword in their direction.

"You gave us iron coins coated with steel!"

His partner grinned and brandished his weapon. "So now it's time to give you a taste of our steel!"

The two thugs rushed toward Nearra and her friends, swords raised high and murder in their eyes.

Review

A year has past since Nearra, Davyn, Catriona, Sindri and Elinor began their journey. They have decided that it is time to confront Maddoc, the evil wizard that is trying to bring forth the evil sorceress' personality that he deposited in Nearra's body. The sorceress, Asvoria, has been watching and waiting inside of Nearra for her chance to break free and take over Nearra's body. In the town of Ravenscar, near where Davyn grew up, they run across his old friend, Ayanti, a female centaur, who soon joins their band when Nearra is stolen away by Maddoc's forces. Then know that they have to secretly enter Cairngorn Keep, where Maddoc lives, and steal Nearra away before Asvoria emerges and their friend disappears within herself forever. Having grown up and played inside and out of the keep, Davyn leads them to a secret underground passage that will take them inside. But Maddoc, being the powerful wizard that he is, sets a trap for the intrepid adventurers. Trapped inside the Chamber of Hours, Maddoc frees Davyn who agrees to help him bring about the emergence of Asvoria leaving his friends ensnared forever in a land that does not really exist.

Return of the Sorceress is the fourth book in DragonLance: The New Adventures series and is written by Tim Waggoneer. It is a young adult fantasy story that takes place in the DragonLance universe and is intended for readers ages 10 and up. This story has the following main characters: Nearra - a female teenage who awakes in the forest with amnesia, Davyn - a human, male teenage ranger, Catriona - a female warrior who has failed at becoming a knight, Sindri - a kender wizard, and Elidor - a male elf thief.

This is the book I have been waiting for. What will happen when Asvoria emerges? Will Nearra be able to fight her off, yet gain the evil sorceresses powers? Or will Nearra be forever trapped inside her body without any control? Will the five be joined by Ayanti, the centaur? Wouldn't that be cool? Return of the Sorceress by Tim Waggoner (author of the first book in this series, Temple of the Dragonslayer) delivers a home run with this book. I quite enjoyed the return of the silver dragon, Raedon, and the plot twists that kept me reading until late in the night. Return of the Sorceress is another excellent young adult fantasy novel published in the DragonSlayer: The New Adventures series that is a must read. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and have become quite hooked into the real fantasy drama. So, if you are a young reader, or even an adult like me, and are looking for a real Dungeons and Dragons novel, pick up a copy of Return of the Sorceress. And the ending . . . , well, you will have to read it for yourself. All I know is that I have to read the next book, Dragon Sword by Ree Soesbee soon . . . very soon.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
