The Lift Doors Opened…

…and Picard got inside. But he didn’t get inside alone. The X-Man known as Archangel came with him.

As the doors closed, Archangel turned to him. “You’re going after that cluster missile, aren’t you?”

The captain didn’t return the winged man’s scrutiny. “As it happens,” he said, “I am. Computer – Shuttlebay One.”

The lift began to move.

”Take me with you,” said Archangel.

Finally, Picard looked at him – his expression a skeptical one. “Why would I do that?”

”Because I can help,” the mutant told him. “I may not be a hundred percent, but I can probably fly at peak efficiency for a short period of time. With a little luck, I can make it to the missile and disarm it.”

The captain shook his head. “We don’t know anything about the technology that went into it.”

”But we will,” Archangel insisted. “When we’re up close and personal with it, you’ll scan it with those high-powered, sophisticated instruments of yours and figure out what makes it tick.”

”Even so,” said Picard, “the friction created by its passage through the atmosphere will render it too hot to handle.”

”Can you slow it down?” the mutant asked.

Picard glared at him. “Yes, with a tractor beam. But what if you make a mistake and the device explodes in your face?”

Archangel smiled a taut smile. “Then you’ll have one less annoying X-Man flying around your ship.”

Review

On the planet Xhaldia, ordinary people are transforming into super-powered individuals on their 22nd birthday. They are quickly swept up by the government, and thrown into seclusion in an abandoned prison. But the crumbling fortress cannot hold the new mutants for long and they escape. Meanwhile, on Starbase 88, the X-Men pop into this dimension and demand to see Captain Picard. After picking up the X-Men, Picard learns of the troubles on Xhaldia, and the X-Men insist on helping the new mutants, having known what it is like to be persecuted back in their own reality on Earth. Arriving at Xhaldia, the crew of the Enterprise is surprised to find an battle-ready ship manned by hostile aliens orbiting the planet. Picard finds himself in a firefight he cannot possibly win with the aliens and also learns that they are there to harvest the newly formed mutants. Both Picard and the X-Men know that they cannot let the aliens take the new mutants. The only question is…how can they stop them?

The X-Men that appear in this story are Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Archangel, Nightcrawler and Shadowcat. This book seems to take place after some previous engagement between Captain Picard and the X-Men. For the X-Men, it has only been a few minutes since they saw the Captain. But Picard has already been back in his universe for over a year. Some references are made to this earlier adventure, but it is not necessary to read that story to enjoy this one. (I don’t know if the previous adventure is in comic book or paperback form…but I suppose that it is in comic book form.) This adventure takes place in the normal Star Trek universe after the second Next Generation movie on the USS Enterprise-E.

I have recently stopped reading most comics. The only Marvel comic I continue to read is the Fantastic Four. But for years, I have known who the X-Men were and was a little worried about a book that tries to cross them with the Star Trek Universe. Having never really read X-Men with any regularity, the only X-Man that I didn’t know in this story was Shadowcat. But it is not really necessary to know who the X-Men are to enjoy this book. Of course, it will help some. As for the author, I am quite familiar with Michael Jan Friedman’s work, having collected all of the DC Star Trek Next Generation comics. Mr. Friedman wrote quite a few of them and they were all good stories, as is this. He mixes the two groups better then I thought possible. If you are a Star Trek Next Generation fan like I am, and are feeling a little trepidation about picking up this book, let me just say this...the last two pages of the book make it all worthwhile. My smile was a mile wide...I think I even laughed out loud!

I rated this book a 7½ out of 10.
