Review

Negi Springfield is an English teacher at the all girls Mahora School District Middle School in Japan even though he is only 10 years old. After learning that his new contract with Asuna has created a Tarot Card, Negi informs Evangeline that his father, the wizard that put a curse on her, otherwise known as the Southern Master, is still alive. She informs Negi that his father used to live somewhere around Kyoto so he comes up with the idea of his class should take a 4 day field trip to that city (mostly so he can secretly hunt down the Southern Master). A few days later, Negi and his students hop on the bullet train to Kyoto and begin a field trip they will never forget. On the train, a bird steals Negi's letter and he tracks it down to Setsuna Sakurazaki, a young swordswoman. At first, Negi believes her to be another enemy, but she turns out to be an ally and help both Negi and Asuna when Konoka is kidnapped by a giant monkey. Well, not really a giant monkey, but someone dressed up as a giant monkey. Go figure.

Negima!: Magister Negi Magi - Volume 4 is a manga book written and drawn by Ken Akamatsu. This collection of eight periods (chapters 26 - 34) was translated by Douglas Varenas and adapted by Peter David (one of my favorite comic book writers) and Kathleen O'Shea David. This book contains the following periods:

  • 26th Period: Proof of a Contract!?

  • 27th Period: A Secret Date!? Cheerleaders Attack!

  • 28th Period: Ribbit Ribbit -- Panic on the Bullet Train!?

  • 29th Period: The Spy and the Thorough Thumping!?

  • 30th Period: Konoka and Setsuna's Secret

  • 31st - 32nd Period: Weird! Kyoto and the Cardmaster!!

  • 33rd Period: A Favor of the Large Buddha!? (In Nara)

  • 34th Period: Shocking Kyoto Video Proves Existence of a Wizard!?

There is also some special extras in the following sections: A Word from the Author, Honorifics, Fan Art, Character Sketches, Lexicon Negimarium de Cantu, Class Roster, About the Creator, Translation Notes, and a Preview of Volume 5, although the preview is in Japanese. The book reads from right to left and back to front, just like a book from Japan. This manga book is intended for readers ages 16 and up.

Negima!: Magister Negi Magi is my favorite manga series that Del Rey Manga publishes> It just gets batter and better and  always keeps the entertainment value high. Sure, there is a little nudity in the book, but they never show anything perverted. Unfortunately for Negi, he ends up in some pretty controversial positions. It always makes me laugh. I also really like when Ken Akamatsu creates long storylines, like this fieldtrip to Kyoto. To me, that is much more enjoyable then lots of individual short stories. Once again, the artwork is excellent and the adaptation is the best. This series has more dialog in it that any other manga series and you can tell that Peter David is really working hard to make sure the English flows well. I really enjoyed the new enemies of Negi and all of the trouble that he gets into. Once again, Negima!: Magister Negi Magi - Volume 4 is an excellent manga book and I can't wait to continue the field trip in Negima!: Magister Negi Magi - Volume 5. I sure hope Negi finds the Southern Master. Hmmm . . . I wonder if her will cure Evangeline. Not without a fight, I'm sure.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
