A Perfect Day for Love Letters: Volume 1 contain five stand alone stories about young men and women who send a love letter from a secret admirer. This book contains the following stories:

  • Love Letters in the Library - Takase Ririko goes to school and spends time volunteering the the library. She wants a job there someday as a full-time librarian. One day, when she finds some books left behind on a table in the library, she flips through them before she puts them back on the shelf. Inside one of them she finds a love letter written to her. She begins a quest to find out who could have written her the note.

  • To One Who Doesn't Know Me - Ayako finds a nice letter from Masumura Yasushi, a rather big-haired tattooed guy she goes to school with, that he wrote to another girl. She is touched by his gentle heart. She writes him back and tells Matumura how she would love it is she had an admirer like him. They soon start writing back and forth, but never talking in person. Could this lead to something more?

  • Flowers Blooming in the Snow - Kumashiro has always admired Miyishita Chiyuki from afar. He writes her a letter and she responds. But he misunderstands what she is saying. One day he spots her in a swamp in a boat with another man. He hops in the boat and later both of them fall out of the boat into the dirty water. While drying their clothes by a fire, she confesses that the man was about to rape her.

  • Love Letter Panic - One day at school, Haya finds a love letter in her locker. She has never dressed up before, never worn makeup and never really cared what other people thought about her. But now some boy thinks she is cute and she begins a mission to track him down so they can go out on a date. Haya begins dressing nicer, wearing makeup and acting like a young woman. Her friend Morimuri is always by her side and he knows which guys didn't send the letter.

  • The Mailman's Love - Every day, the mailman has been delivering mail to Sawako. When he approached the house, he would always see her playing the cello with a man sitting in another chair listening to the music. But the man has been gone the last few weeks. The mailman has always admired this blind cello player and reads a letter to her from the man that left. It is not a good letter. He changes what the letter says because he does not want to hurt Sawako's feeling because the man will never be back. So, the mailman starts writing fake letters from the missing man and reading them to her until he can stand it no longer. The truth must be told.

A Perfect Day for Love Letters: Volume 1 is a manga book written and drawn by George Asakura. This book was translated and adapted by david & Eriko Walsh and Lettered by Foltz Design. This book contains Letters 1 through 5. There is also some special extras in the following sections: A Note from the Author, Bonus Manga, About the Author, Honorifics Explained, Translation Notes, and a Preview of Volume 2, although the preview is in Japanese. The book reads from right to left and back to front, just like a book from Japan. This manga book is intended for readers ages 16 and up.

A Perfect Day for Love Letters: Volume 1 is an interesting blend of short stories about young people in love. I wasn't very impressed with the artwork and thought it could have been better. The five stories themselves are okay, but again, I was not grabbed by the characters and pulled into the stories. I don't know what I was hoping for, but maybe it was for some tales that were a little lighter in nature. In this book you have relationships where a boy is quite mean to a girl just because he likes her (which I find to be true in 10-year olds, not high school students), a girl that has been raped, a man lying to a blind woman, etc. None of it shows the softer side of love that really exists in the world. Still, I did enjoy reading the stories and the book does have some good points. Overall, I found A Perfect Day for Love Letters: Volume 1 to be not bad, but I really think some things may have gotten lost in translation. So, I will see how things fair in A Perfect Day for Love Letters: Volume 2. Let's hope those stories are a little more fun to read.

I rated this book a 6 out of 10.
