Eight remained.

Drizzt eased the corpse to the ground and took its place, putting his back to the stone.

A moment later, one of the goblins called to him, thinking he was the dead goblin. Drizzt grunted in reply. A hand reached around to pat his shoulder, and the drow couldn't hide his smile.

The goblin tapped him once, then again, more slowly, then the thing began feeling around the drow's thick cloak, apparently noticing Drizzt's taller statue.

A curious expression on its ugly face, the goblin peeked around the mound.

Then there were seven, and Drizzt leaped out into their midst, scimitars flashing in a flurry that took the two nearest goblins down in the blink of an eye.

The remaining five shrieked and ran about, some colliding with stalagmites, others slapping and falling all over each other.

A goblin came straight for Drizzt, its mouth flapping a steady stream of undiscernible words and its hands held wide, as though in a gesture of friendship. Apparently the evil creature only then recognized this dark elf was no potential comrade, for it began to frantically back away. Drizzt's scimitars crossed in a downward slash, drawing an X of hot blood on the creature's chest.

Guenhwyvar streaked beside the drow and attacked a goblin fleeing toward the far side of the cavern. With a single swipe of the panther's huge claw, the count was down to three.

Review

The dark elf, Drizzt Do'Urden pays a visit to his friends at Mithral Hall. Catti-brie is soon to wed the barbarian Wulfgar. Soon after Drizzt's arrival, the halfling, Regis appears and does not quite seem himself. He is eager for battle, which is not something he has ever looked forward too before. It is brought to the attention of King Bruenor that goblins are in the lower tunnels, tunnels the dwarves haven't been in for hundred of years. Using the excuse that the goblins should be purged and the tunnels retaken, Bruener lead a force of dwarves with Drizzt, Catti-brie, Wulfgar, and Drizzt's phantom cat Guenhwyvar down into tunnels that dwarves have not entered in centuries. After killing or driving off the rest of the goblins, they return to Mithril Hall feeling quite victorious. But news soon reached Bruenor's ears that a party of seven dwarves are missing in the deep tunnels. Drizzt and Regis volunteer to go look for them. In Menzoberranzan, Drizzt's sister, Vierna has a plan to capture Drizzt and bring him to justice. She leads a couple of groups of drow up into the caverns. After finding the dead dwarves, which had been killed by drow, Drizzt is captured by his arch-enemy, the human assassin Artemis Entreri and taken to Vierna. Back in Mithril Hall, a strange-looking dwarf in battle armor appears named Thibbledorf Pwent. He joins Bruenor, Catti-brie, and Wulfgar as they head back down into the tunnels looking Drizzt, who has failed to return. They soon realize that there are more drow in the tunnels than they can handle and begin to wonder if they can escape with their hides in tack.

The Legacy is the first book in The Legacy of the Drow series. This Forgotten Realms fantasy tale features R.A. Salvatore's signature character, Drizzt Do'Urden, the dark elf. Other main characters in the story are: Bruenor - eighth King of the Mithral Hall, Catti-brie - the the human female and adopted daughter of Bruenor, Wulfgar - barbarian and fiancee of Catti-brie, Regis - the peace-loving ever hungry halfling, Thibbledorf Pwent - a smelly dwarf battlerager, Artemis Entreri - a human assassin who hates Drizzt, and Vierna - one of Drizzt's older evil sisters.

This is the eighth book I have read by R.A. Salvatore and I have loved them all. He never ceases to amaze me in his ability to write fantastic battle scenes. From the first time the dwarves go down into the tunnels looking for the goblins, the pace of the storytelling is quick and filled with battle after battle after battle. The drow in The Legacy are perfectly evil and easy to hate. This is a simple story that is well-crafted and very enjoyable. I seriously had the hardest time putting this book down and, if I did, could not wait to pick it up later. Not having read the two previous series, "The Icewind Dale Trilogy" and "The Dark Elf Trilogy," I was a little lost in the Prelude with all of the confusing drow names. This made me a little worried because I didn't have the history of this world or the characters behind me. I should have known that I had nothing to fear. As soon as I had read a few pages in Chapter 1, my fears melted away and I was left with the pleasure of reading an excellent fantasy tale. So, if you are looking for a fantasy book that is action-packed and contains a highly interesting main character, pick of The Legacy by R.A. Salvatore. You won't be sorry that you did.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.
