A Sudden Electronic Squeal Came Over The Transmitter

”What’s that?” Leia snapped.

”Someone’s jamming us,” Han growled, jabbing at the transmitter cutoff. The squealing vanished, leaving an unpleasant ringing in the ears as he keyed for intercom. “Chewie, we’ve got trouble,” he called. “Get up here.”

He got an acknowledgment, turned back to the transmitter. “Get us a scan of the area,” he told Leia. “See if there’s anything coming in.”

”Right,” Leia said, already working the keys, “What are you going to do?”

”I’m going to find us a clear frequency.” He pulled the Falcon out of its approach vector, made sure they had an open field around them, then turned the transmitter back on, keeping the volume low. There were freq-scanning and mixing tricks that he’d used in the past against this kind of jamming. The question now was whether he was going to have the time to implement them.

Abruptly, much quicker than he’d expected, the squeal dissolved into a voice. “—peating: any ships who can read me, please check in.”

”Lando, it’s me,” Han called. “What’s going on?”

”I’m not sure,” Lando said, sounding distracted. “It could be just a solar flare scrambling our communication—that happens sometimes. But the pattern here doesn’t seem quite right for…”

His voice trailed off. “What?” Han demanded. There was a faint hiss from the speaker, the sound of someone inhaling deeply. “Imperial Star Destroyer,” Lando said quietly. “Coming in fast toward the planetary shadow.”

Han looked at Leia, saw her face turn to stone as she looked back to him. “They’ve found us,” she whispered.

Review

A few years have passed since the battle at Endor. Han married Leia and she is pregnant with twins. Luke, the last of the Jedi, is moody and appears to be bothered by something. Meanwhile the Empire is not the powerhouse that it was before. Captain Pallaeon is commanding the Chimaera, the Empires lead Imperial Star Destroyer. Soon, he is joined by Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn’s objective is to rebuild the Empires Fleet. To do this, he finds C’baoth, a clone of a Jedi, who went into hiding after the Clone Wars. When the Emperor was killed by Darth Vader, the Emperor’s hold over the battles was no longer evident and the dark side of the Force was no longer helping the Empire’s ships win. Thrawn wants a Dark Jedi to bring the dark side of the force into play during the battles to help them win. But C’baoth demands something…he wants Luke, Leia, and the twins she is carrying. Soon afterward, and attempt is made to kidnap both Luke and Leia. Leia decides to go to Chewbacca’s home planet to evade further attempts. Luke hops into his X-Wing and runs into an Imperial Star Destroyer, and destroys his X-Wing while escaping a tractor beam. While floating helpless in space, he is picked up by a freighter. For some reason, the Force leaves him completely, which leave him feeling naked, as he realizes that he is trapped. And to make things even worse, Mara, the person that found him, has wanted to kill him for five years…and now she finally has her chance.

This is a Star Wars book. It is the first book in The Thrawn Trilogy. The book is well-written and Timothy Zahn has nailed the characters perfectly. The story takes place on many worlds, some of the familiar, and some not…but all interesting. The story takes place five years after the Emperor and Darth Vader died. Thrawn is not Darth Vader, but he is a good bad guy. As for C’baoth, he is not seen too much in this story, so it is hard to tell what kind of character he is going to be.

I have had this book sitting around for eight years. But I finally decided to pick it up and I was not disappointed. In fact, I was highly impressed. This book is a page-turner. If you loved the first three Star Wars movies (Episodes IV, V, and VI), as most of us did, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. And this is only the first of three. I found myself looking forward to coming home after work, grabbing a lawn chair, and sitting in the back just reading this book. For a Star Wars fan, this is a must-read. Pick it up. You will love it.

I rated this book an 9 out of 10.
