"Kellach, watch out!" Driskoll called.

The wolf leaped for Kellach's arm, but Kellach spun around just in time.

He swung his branch hard and connected with the wolf's chest. But this time, the blow only seemed to make the wolf angrier. Kellach backed up slowly. The wolf crouched low and gave a dangerous growl.

Suddenly Moyra remembered the amulet. She gripped the stone around her neck and, hoping it would work, shouted, "Fire!"

Nothing happened.

How does this thing work? Moyra thought. She wished she could read the Elvish words engraved on the amulet.

She held the necklace higher. "Fire! Fire!"

Still nothing happened.

"It's broken!" Moyra yelled. "The amulet's not working."

"Emalf!" Kellach shouted. "Emalf. Say Emalf!" The small wolf sprang at Kellach with its jaws snapping. He hit it with the branch again, but it hesitated only a moment before it moved in again to attack.

"Emalf," Moyra repeated quietly, pointing the amulet at the small wolf crouching in front of Kellach.

Her body jolted backward as a bolt of flame jetted out from the center of the amulet, missing the small wolf's nose by an inch. The little wolf yowled and huddled against the ground, covering its nose with its paws.

"It worked!" she cried, jumping up and down. "I did it!"

"Uh, Moyra?" Driskoll tugged on her arm. "We still have one small problem!"

The pony-sized wolf padded toward her, the growl low in its throat.

"Hah!" Moyra said. "I've got you this time." She pointed the amulet.

Review

Snow! It is snowing in Curston. It never snows in Curston. Kellach, Driskoll and Moyra take advantage of this strange occurrence to have a snowball fight. When the boys have to leave, Moyra looks down toward her feet and discovers a tightly packed snowball. She knocks the snow away from it and finds a large blue gem in the center. Hiding the gem, she realizes that if she sells it, she and her mom can stop living in poverty. The next day, Zendric has disappeared and the three youths go to his tower to look for him. Before he disappeared, Zendric gave Kellach, his apprentice, a book and told him to guard it well. On the cover is the Elvish symbol for "Fire Amulets." Moyra remembers seeing this symbol in the ruins outside of town. When they travel to the ruins, they discover a giant castle made of ice. When they return to Curston, the merchants, who have been running out of things to sell because the supply wagons can't make it through the snow, were happy that Fridjog has made it through the snow and has plenty to sell to the merchants. He also claims that the ice castle is his new home and he is happy to help out his neighbors in their time of need. But when he learns that Moyra might have the blue gem, Moyra realizes that this merchant might not be all that he seems.

Figure in the Frost is the fifth book in the Knights of the Silver Dragon series and is written by Lana Perez. It is a young adult fantasy story that takes place in the Dungeon & Dragons universe and is intended for readers ages 9 and up. This story has the following main characters: Kellach - a 14-year old male teenage wizard's apprentice, Driskoll - Kellach's 12-year old brother who wants to learn to fight with a sword, and Moyra - a 13-year old female who has always lived the life of a thief. Together, they are the Knights of the Silver Dragon.

Figures in the Frost is a departure from the norm because the book finally focuses on the least written about character, Moyra, the young daughter of an imprisoned thief. I really liked that I finally go to know more about Moyra and her struggling mother. This story is also interesting becasue there is snow in a town that rarely gets any, and never for an extended period of time. Curston is a place where it rarely snows and the town is not prepared for this change in weather and either are the inhabitants. People are scrambling to find clothing that will keep them warm and food to fill their bellies. Young Readers will like this change of pace in the storyline. They will also enjoy trying to figure out who the mysterious Fridjog is. Obviously, he has come to Curston to cause some mischief, but why? I enjoyed the writing style of Lana Perez and I applaud her for focusing on someone other than Kellach and Driskoll. Overall, Figures in the Frost is a fun read that kids of all ages will love. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next Knights of the Silver Dragon book, Dagger of Doom by Kerry Daniel Roberts.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.
