"Krek,
run for it!"
Lan Martak
spotted a patrol of grey-clad soldiers marching in precise step. Their
officer had already located them before Lan shoved Krek in the opposite
direction and shouted his order.
The soldiers
had been training well. Their death tubes sprang to hand. Lightning
bolts slashed through the air in front of the fleeting pair, bringing
them to a complete halt. Lan's mind raced as he tried to figure out what
had gone wrong. Getting into the palace undetected had been easy. How
had they been detected?
Krek
silently lifted a leg and pointed toward the sky, Fluttercraft circled
above, far enough away so that the sound of their rapidly spinning
blades didn't reach the ground but not so far away they couldn't spy on
every square inch of the palace grounds.
Lan's mind
tumbled and churned in agitation, preventing him from attaining the
concentration required for casting any of the spells he knew. Even if he
had been able to divert the death beams from himself, there wasn't any
way he could protect Krek, too.
The soldiers
maintained position, cylinders pointed directly at their targets.
Striding through their rank came their captain, smiling broadly. Lan
knew he had reason to be happy: he'd just fulfilled Claybore's
command to capture the "man and the bug."
"The
commandant has been expecting you," said the officer. He bowed and
indicated Lan and Krek should precede him.
Lan walked
off. To face death.

Synopsis |
|
Lan Martak, Krek and Inyx
appear on a world of illusion ruled by an sadistic maze builder, Luister
len-Larrotti. Inyx, who travel there before Lan and Krek, is held
captive in a whorehouse-like place called the Fine Room.
Trapped by
magic, she is forced to sleep with a ton of men, all looking like her
dead husband (magically induced). While there, she attracts the
attention of Luister len-Larrotti who takes her away and drops her into
the Twistings, one of his mazes. Lan also attracts Luister
len-Larrotti's attention because of Krek, who isn't an illusion like
every other think in this dimension.
After being captured, Lan and Krek
are dropped into the Twisting after they find out that a part of
Claybore is in the maze, but they don't know which body part it is. Once
entering the maze, they both learn that Knoton, the leader of the Mechs
in the maze, has sworn to kill all humans.
World of Mazes is the
third book in the Cenotaph Road series. This is a fantasy story about
Lan Martak, his companion spider, Krek, and Inyx as they pursue the evil
sorcerer Claybore. Lan is attempting to prevent the sorcerer
from getting all of his body part back together, which would bring him
back to full power.

Review |
|
This book pick up where
directly where The Sorcerer's Skull
leaves off. In fact, and I was a little confused here, but the first
chapter in this book seems to be the last chapter of the previous book
with more embellishment. This took me a few pages to figure it out, but
then I was okay with it, if not a little mystified.
Like the previous
two books in this series, I really enjoy this storyline. Claybore is not
a main player in this book, but he is not missed, as Luister
len-Larrotti does a fine job of being the sick and twisted bad guy. I
couldn't wait to see how he was gonna get his comeuppance.
I really do
enjoy Mr. Vardeman's writing style. It is simple, quick, and easy to
read. The story moves along at a fast pace and the action is always
ready to jump out from around the corner and keep the reader interested.
I can't wait to see what happens on the next world in the next book!
World of Mazes is
another great book in the Cenotaph Road series.
I rated this book an 8 out
of 10.
