The Wizards Dark Trap!
The uwagi was suddenly rigid,
shoulders flung back, the ghastly features strained upwards,
howling at the clouded sky, the taloned hands opening and then
clenching as the body shuddered and seemed to shift, another
image imposed over its brutish form: the shape of a Jesseryte
warrior, the veil of his helmet thrown back to reveal a face,
indistinct, beastly and human, both, that smiled malign mockery.
Calandryll stared, seeing
the form of the Jesseryte imposed on the flickering shape of
the uwagi, one then the other, dream-like, like the shifting,
darting movements of a fish glimpsed through rippling, sunlit
water.
He braced himself, favoring
his bruised leg, the straightsword extended, knowing beyond doubt
what--who!--possessed the were-thing.
And Rhythamun chuckled and
said, A tidy trap, no? Use that blade and you die, leaving
me the victory. Do you use it, and my pets rend you limb from
limb. Youve seen their work, I thinkshall you enjoy
that fate? No matter, for I take the day. The day and the Arcanum,
both, with all the world to follow when I raise Tharn. And for
you, suffering beyond your imagination.

Synopsis |
|
Calandryll, Bracht, Katya and
now Cennaire, the Revenant, join together in the pursuit of Rhythemun,
who still has the Arcanum. As Rhythemun approaches his goal of
raising the Mad God, Calandryll finds himself falling for the
newest member of the party, Cennaire. She in turn is held in
power by the evil wizard, Anomius whose plans have changed since
he found out that Calandryll is after the Arcanum, and decides
that he shall battle Rhythemun when the time is right. Little
known to him, his servant, Cennaire, finds herself falling for
Calandryll, even though she lacks a heart and is only empowered
with life through evil magic.
Along the way the party becomes
entangled in a civil war. They meet Ochen, another wizard of
a sort, and are not sure whether he can be trusted. When Cennaire
saves Calandryll and survives magic that no living creature could,
she is revealed to be the Revenant Anomius has sent to kill them. But,
there is a problem. Calandryll seems to have fallen
for the un-dead woman.
Wild Magic is the third and final book
in the Godwars trilogy by Angus Wells.

Review |
|
Wild Magic continues right where Dark Magic left off. Unlike
the first two books in the series, this book is a little slower
with a lot of information revealed about the people living on
the Jesseryn Plain and the civil war they are having.
I liked this book, but not nearly
as much as the first two. It had a lot of slow parts that I had
not come to expect based upon my experience with the first two
books of the series.
In this book there is a lot of soul-searching,
but not a lot of action. Well, until the end of the book,
that is. Still, it is necessary to read the final chapter of
this story just so you can see how the trilogy ends.
I
do like Angus Wells writing style. I find it extremely
comfortable to read. As in the first two books, there is a map
in the front of the book making it easy for the reader to follow
the heroes on their quest.
Because of the lack of action in Wild Magic, and some of the long drawn out storytelling, I could not
rate this book nearly as high as the first two books in this
series.
I rated this book a 7½
out of 10. |
