In the Depths of the Mountain Lake...

"What is your name?" The sprite's voice sang to Drodan.

He opened his mouth to speak and promptly snapped it shut. What had the ancient texts said about revealing your true name to a creature of fairie?

The sprite giggled. "Your friend told us his name."

"Let him go." Drodan was startled that his words came out as a weak whisper even under the water.

"Wouldn't you like to join him?" A voice sang softly in his ear.

Yes, he thought for a moment, growing very tired. Forget the world above. Forget this journey that seemed it would never end. The Nefar would probably end it for him anyway. How nice to stay here with the light and the peace. How easy just to tell her his name and be done with it. Without Trelar how could he...

He opened his mouth again, this time to speak his name and accept whatever fate its telling ordained.

"Dro..."

A rough hand jerked him up. He could feel himself being pulled, could see the sky above that was blue...or was it the water of the lake? He gulped, but there was no air. He tried to cough, but couldn't find the strength. He was drowning...couldn't breathe...hurt all over...and then only darkness.

Synopsis

Drodan's father is killed by Illdred, the High Wizard of Zale, before Illdred could extract the information he needed. Now he is after Drodan, who is also a scribe, like his father was. Drodan's best friend and theif, Trelar, escape Illdreds clutches, but are trapped in the city.

They are helped to escape by the King's wife, Queen Natia, who has her own purpose for the young scribe. Natia requires Drodan's skills in interpreting the Code of the Zarians, an ancient book. Before fleeing the city, they rescue Lyka, a humanoid that can turn into a mighty, fighting lizard, from the King, who has just purchased her from the slave auction. As they travel, Drodan and Trelar begin to suspect that the Queen has ulterior motives and do not trust her.

On their journey, they rescue a fallen warrior, Xur. After he has healed, he travels with them, teaching Droden and Trelar how to fight. He has been paid to return a wealthy man's daughter who has run off with her lover. Meanwhile, the runaway, Vestia, and her lover, Dalian, head toward the wizard's keep in hope of some magic they can use to prevent her marriage to Illdred.

Deep in a mountain a dragon slumbers, watching all of this unfold, knowing that all is going as he planned.

Reign of the Dragon is the first published book by Sandra Fallon. It is the first in a, as of yet, unnamed trilogy. This book is published by AmErica House, a self-publishing company for new authors.

Review

I wasn't sure what to think after looking at the cover of Reign of the Dragon. The cover isn't so hot, but don't let that dissuade you. I was quite pleased after sitting down and polishing off a few chapters.

This is a rip-roaring fantasy tale that can easily draw the reader into the story. The characters are all fresh and interesting. The storytelling is well done and moves along at a fair pace building to the action-packed conclusion.

I found myself thinking a lot about the story during the day when I was not reading. When that happens, that generally means to me that I really like a book. And I really liked this one. Yes, the punctuation is a little distracting...but I can live with that, as the book probably wasn't edited by a professional, as it is Sandra Fallon's first novel. So I will cut her a little slack and give her the benefit of the doubt.

I found myself really getting involved in this book and ended up sitting down for the last 50 pages and just had to polish it off. I have read a lot of fantasy, and I really think this first novel rates up there pretty high.

A word of warning though, since this is a self-published book, the editing leaves something to be desired. The punctuation is a little weak, and there are some spelling errors. Once you accept this, you will find the story to be good reading.

So, if you love a good fantasy romp, pick up a copy of Reign of the Dragon. I know that you will enjoy it.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
