The Beginning of the Story

There was a soft BAMF! as the ether was rent asunder and a demon appeared in the room. Right there! In my private quarters in the Possiltum royal palace!

Before I could recover from my surprise or Aahz could move to intervene, the demon plopped itself onto my lap and planted a big, warm kiss full on my mouth.

”Hi, handsome!” it purred. “How’s tricks?”

Synopsis

Aahz is getting bored with hanging out in Possiltum, where Skeeve is the court magician, when Tananda pops in and requests the presence of Skeeve. Her plan is to visit a lot of out of the way dimensions looking for a birthday present for Aahz. Skeeve jumps at the chance since he has only ever been to one other dimension.

They travel quite a few dimensions while Skeeve practices his disguise spell. But when they arrive in Jank, a dimension that has either extremes skinny or overweight humanoids, they witness a parade in the city of Ta-hoe. The reason for the parade is that Ta-hoe has finally beaten Veygus for the first time in 5 years in the Big Game, and now they have the Trophy . . . which happens to be the ugliest thing Tananda and Skeeve have ever seen. But the crowd is going wild for it.

Tananda makes up her mind then and there that this unique item will be Aahz’s birthday present. After checking out the Trophy Building, Tananda and Skeeve make their plans to steal the Trophy. When they are about to take the Trophy, the Veygusians steal it out from under their noses and Tananda is captured.

Skeeve reveals all of this to Aahz and they head back to see what can be done to rescue Tananda. But the magician for Ta-hoe has Tananda in a sleep spell and refuses to give her up.

Myth Directions is the third book of the Myth Adventure series by Robert Asprin. This story takes place about a year after Myth Conceptions. But it is not necessary to have read either of the two previous books to enjoy this one, but it helps. Once again, Skeeve finds himself in trouble and must rely on Aahz to help him get out of a bind. So what does Aahz do? He decides that he wants his birthday present. And how is he going to do it? He challenges both Ta-hoe and Veygus to play the Big Game…a three way version. Is there any problem with this? Well…yeah. Aahz knows absolutely nothing about the Big Game and he only has one month to prepare.

Review

Like the previous two books in the Myth series, Myth Directions is a fun read. The dialog is quick and smart. And the storyline moves along at an incredible pace. All of the characters are great and Aahz and Skeeve find themselves in another sticky situation…like they always seem to do.

It is not often that Fantasy is mixed with Humor, but Robert Asprin does an excellent job of mixing both. I read this book years ago and still got as much pleasure out of the second read, since I had forgotten most of it anyway. But Aahz and Skeeve are two of my favorite characters and I could read about them anytime.

If you want some fun, pick up Myth Directions. You won’t be disappointed.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.
