He was big. I mean really big!

”Hightail it outta here, kid,: my mentor ordered. “I’ll try to keep the dragon busy.”

An image flashed in my mind. It was a view of me, Skeeve, court magician, bolting for safety while Aahz faced the dragon alone. Something snapped in my mind.

”You go!”

”Kid, are you—“

”It’s my war and my job,” I shouted. “Now get going.”

With that I turned to face the oncoming dragon, not knowing or caring if Aahz followed my orders. I was Skeeve!

Synopsis

Almost a year has past since Skeeve became Aahz’s apprentice. They have spent their time in the inn that they inherited from Isstvan. A messenger from the kingdom of Possiltum arrives and requests that the great magician Skeeve appear before the King, Roderick the Fifth, for the position of Court Magician. Aahz’s sees this as a great opportunity to get paid for doing relatively nothing and to increase Skeeve’s reputation as a magician.

After attaining the position, Skeeve learns that his first job is to stop and approaching army that threatens to swallow Possiltum. After viewing the incredible size of the Empire’s army, Skeeve and Aahz, are joined by Tanda, who originally suggested to Roderick the Fifth to call for Skeeve in the first place. They travel to Deva to gather supplies and to recruit and army to battle the Empire’s army. Unfortunately, Skeeve only hires a Gargoyle, an Imp, and an Archer, while Aahz cannot find anybody to hire.

They return to Klah and face the army. Things actually go well in the first battle. But then a huge dragon is sent to take on Skeeve and his band. The only problem is…Skeeve has no idea how to beat it.

Myth Conceptions is the second book of the Myth Adventures series by Robert Asprin. These books are incredibly funny fantasy tales that revolve around the lives of Skeeve and Aahz. The story moves along at a very fast pace with almost all of it written as dialog between the characters . . . and the dialog is quick and witty. Tanda and Brockhurst return in this story and the adventurers are joined by some new faces. Most of the story takes place on Skeeve’s world of Klah.

Review

If you pick up a Myth book, you know that you are in for a fun, good time.

As Robert Asprin becomes more familiar with his characters, the banter between the becomes even more funny. Asprin states that he is trying to capture the feel of Bob and Bing’s dialog in the Road movies . . . and he does a great job of it. Personally, I love the quick, witty dialog and enjoy the way that the story moves along at a fast pace, with no slow spots. I can’t tell you how many times authors get bogged down trying to be so darned descriptive to set the mood.

Asprin does is perfectly in this tale. I actually like this book a little more that the first book in the series, Another Fine Myth.

So, if you want a funny, fantasy tale that you can sit down to for a couple of night and enjoy thoroughly, pick up Myth Conceptions and get ready to smile.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
