Pervish Myth-Behavior

"Nice of you to drop by, mister!"

That was said by a Pervect, one of six who were blocking our path down the alley.

"Of course, you know this here's what you'd call a toll-alley. You got to pay to use it."

"That's right," one of his cronies chimed in. "We figure what you got in your pockets ought to cover it."

I decided that this would be an excellent time to delegate a problem.

"C'mon Kalvin! Do something!"

"Like what? I told you I'm no good in a fight."

"Well, do SOMETHING! You're supposed to be the Djin!"

"Oh, all right!" he grimaced. "Maybe this will help."

With that, he made a few passes with his hands and...

...And I was stone-cold sober!

"That's all I can do for you," he shrugged. "At least now you won't have to fight 'em drunk."

Synopsis

When Aahz decides to leave M.Y.T.H. Inc. and Skeeve and return to his home dimension of Perv (see M.Y.T.H. Inc. Link), Skeeve travels to Perv to convince Aahz to return. His only companion is Kalvin, a pint-sized Djin who has granted Skeeve one wish. Skeeve is amazed at the way that Perv has commingled both science and magic and is quite intimidated by the large metropolis that he ends up in, never having been in a city before.

Skeeve hops into a taxi driven by Edvik, who in turn takes Skeeve to a hotel. Skeeve hires Edvik as a guide, as Skeeve knows little to nothing about Perv, except that the food smells really nasty, as is the disposition of most of the natives.

After days with no luck in finding Aahz, Skeeve begins to get disgruntled and walks into a bar to get a drink. Instead he gets drunk and plops all of his money down on the table, which, of course, stops all conversation and has ever Pervert, make that Pervect, eyeing Skeeve with greed. Without his friends, even in his drunken stupor, Skeeve knows that he is in more trouble than he can handle.

Myth-nomers and Im-pervections is the eighth book of the Myth Adventures series by Robert Asprin. These books are incredibly funny fantasy tales that normally revolve around the lives of Skeeve and Aahz. In this book, the focus once again returns to Skeeve. This book is not a funny as most of the others in the Myth series, but the still is funny, good and links two books together. This book also introduces a new character by the name of Pookie, a female Pervect that Skeeve hires as a bodyguard.

Review

I was happy with the focus of the story returning to Skeeve. Without the Aahz and Skeeve interaction, I found the story lacking its quick dialog and the fun that I was used to expecting in this series. Still, the story is interesting as you get to learn more about Perv and more information about Aahz in his youth, although I felt that it wasn't enough. I really would have liked to learn a lot more.

Overall, even though Myth-nomers and Im-pervections is not quite as funny as the others, it is still an interesting read as Skeeve tries to figure out how to survive in a hostile environment. Like all the books in this series, this is a quick read that can be enjoyed by all ages. The Myth series is a fantastic run of books that top my list of fantasy series to read.

I rated this book a 7½ out of 10.
