The
Weeping God
"Monstrous!"
the Spirit of Mara roared. The God's huge face convulsed with anger,
and he strode directly toward the horse of the sleep-spelled Princess Ce'Nedra.
"I will rend thy flesh, daughter of Nedra. I will sink thee in torment
and terror all the days of thy life!"
"That's
enough, Mara. Stop!" The voice was Garion's. He slid from his horse
to approach the giant figure. "Your vengeance stops here, Mara," his
voice said. "You will not touch her."
"I will
have her!" Mara howled.
"No," Garion's voice replied.
"You won't!"
The God
raised an arm to strike. Garion felt a vast touch on his mind. Then a
dreadful recognition began to dawn in Mara's weeping eyes. His arm
fell. "Give her to me," he pleaded.
"No."
Mara fell
back. "I must submit," the God said hoarsely. Then he bowed to
Garion, his ravaged face strangely humble. He turned away and buried his
face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably.

Synopsis |
|
Belgarath, Garion, Polgara,
Durnik, Barak, Silk, Hettar and Ce'Nedra continue their pilgrimage
following the trail of a priest of Torak who has stolen the Orb of Aldur.
The priest has the intention of awakening the evil God Torak. Belgarath
and Polgara are determined to retrieve the Orb and place it in a
specific sword on the Isle of the Winds before this god can be awakened.
They chase the priest through Maragor, and there confront the Weeping
God, whose people were all slaughtered thousands of years ago by the
people of Nedra.
They then travel to the Vale of Aldur. There, Garion
finally accepts his powers near Belgarath's Tower. They arrive in
Ulgoland and convince Relg to lead them through the caves to Rak Cythol.
They leave Ce'Nedra behind so that she will not get injured. Rak
Cythol is the home of Ctuchik, a magician of some caliber who now has
the Orb and in no way plans on giving it up to his archenemy Belgarath.
Magician's Gambit is the third book in
the five book series The Belgarion. This is a fantasy tale about
Belgarath, a 7,000-year-old Sorcerer, his daughter Polgara, a Sorceress,
and Garion, who will someday fulfill the role of an ancient prophecy.
The tension continues to build in this book as they get closer to the
Orb. Relg, a religious fanatic of the God Ur, is forced to join the
group to lead them safely through the caves. And Garion finally accepts
his powers and begins the training to control them.

Review |
|
This is a great story. But
you do have to read the first two books, Pawn
of Prophecy and Queen of Sorcery,
to understand what is going on in this book. This series is actually one
large book split up into manageable-sized books.
Only one new character
was introduced in this story, and he added a new dimension to the story,
as he is constantly worried about sin and how incredibly sinful he is
for his thoughts. At first I did not like Relg, but he grew on me. As
for the story, it just gets better and better.
I had a hard time putting
this book down at night and looked forward to crawling into bed at night
and cracking it open to become enveloped in the quest. And isn't that
what good books are about.
If you want an old-fashioned
fantasy quest, pick up Magician's Gambit and be prepared to enjoy yourself thoroughly.
I rated this book a 9 out of
10.
