Skull Bearers and Gnome Hunters Await

Then they were clear of the fissure and back out onto the slide leading down to the lake within the mountain crater. Preia Starle stood frozen directly before them, only yards away.

"Shades!" hissed Jerle Shannara.

Before then, arrayed in a broad semicircle that cut off any possibility of escape, were dozens of Gnome Hunters. At their center, black-cloaked and hunched down like wraiths awaiting night, were a pair of the dreaded Skull Bearers.

Their pursuers had caught up with them at last.

The Elves stumbled to a ragged halt behind Preia. Tay counted quickly. They were five matched against almost a hundred. They stood no chance. Preia backed carefully to Jerle's side. She had not drawn a weapon.

"They were waiting when I came out," she said quietly. There was no fear in her voice. She glanced at Tay, and her face was oddly calm. "They are too many for us."

Jerle nodded. He glanced at Tay, grim-faced. Behind them, the fissure belched grit and dust as a new explosion tore through the mountain. The earth shuddered beneath them, still reacting to the fall of the Chew Magna and the giving up of its magic.

"We'll have to go back," Jerle whispered. "Maybe we can find another way out."

But there was no other way, Tay knew. There was only this way, through the Skull Bearers and the Gnome Hunters. Going back into the fissure was suicide. The entire mountain was collapsing, and anything caught within its tunnels would be crushed. Behind and to his left, the remaining Elven Hunter released his grip on Vree Erreden and let the other man slide to the rock floor. The locat was just barely conscious. There was blood on his head and face. When had that happened? Tay wondered. How had he missed it?

The Elven Hunter came forward to stand beside him.

Hopeless, Tay thought.

He eased himself away from Jerle then, testing his strength to stand on his own. He found he could do so. He straightened, then, looked directly at his friend. Jerle stared back at him suspiciously, and Tay smiled at the other in spite of himself. Preia Starle watched him curiously. Her eyes were bright and challenging, and he thought that maybe she saw what Jerle did not.

"Wait here for me," he said.

"What are you going to do?" Jerle demanded at once, stepping forward to take hold of his arm, to restrain him.

Carefully, Tay freed himself. "I'll be all right," he said. "Just wait here."

Synopsis

Brona, the Warlock Lord that caused the First War of the Races a thousand years ago, is still alive, He has gathered an army of Gnome Hunter and Trolls from the north. Over ten thousand strong, they head south wiping out every settlement they run across. Learning that Brona is still alive, Druid Bremen heads toward Paranor, the Druids Keep, to warn the druids. Bremen travels with Kinson Ravenlock, a human Borderman who is highly proficient with a sword.

The Druids of Paranor no longer study magic, only the sciences of old. A select few like Risca, a dwarf and warrior Druid, Tay Trefenwyd, an elf that is a student of the elements, and Mareth, a young human Druid apprentice healer that has innate magic within her, still practice their magic in secret.

After learning that the Druids will do nothing to stop the Warlock Lord, the five head off in different directions. Risca travels to the west to gather the dwarves to be the first line of defense against the encroaching Northern army. Tay travels east to gather the Elves to help support the dwarves. He is also tasked with finding the Black Elfstone, which the Warlock Lord is searching for. The night he arrives home, the entire Elven Royal Family is slaughtered in their beds and the Elven nation is thrown into an chaos. With the help of Jerle Shannara and Preia Starle, Tay goes in search of the Black Elfstone. Soon after, Jerle Shannara is named the new Elf King.

Meanwhile, Brenen, Kinson and Mareth are tasked by the souls of the dead Druids in Hadeshorn to create a special sword that will strike down the Warlock Lord. With Skull Bearers and Gnome Hunters scouring the Four Lands for them, they have to not only move stealthily, they have to find a blacksmith to create the special sword and find the mysterious person that is destined to wield the sword in the Second War of the Races.

First King of Shannara is the prequel to the Original Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks. This fantasy novel in the post-apocalypse fantasy world of Shannara takes place before The Sword of Shannara and explains the origin of Allanon and the Sword of Shannara.

Review

When I was in high school in the early 1980's, I picked up a copy of The Sword of Shannara from the school library. It was the first fantasy novel I had ever read and it is still one of my favorites today. Now, with the prequel to that book, First King of Shannara explains a lot of things I never knew about the world of Shannara.

Allanon has remained as a powerful image in my memory these 30 years or so, and it is wonderful to see him as a child and watch him becoming a Druid. I also found it very enjoyable to learn about the origin of the Sword of Shannara. I didn't know anything about Jerle Shannara, except the trilogy named after him, and I always love reading about Elves, so it was terrific to get to know him better.

From the beginning of the book, I had a hard time putting it down. While on vacation in Maui, I looked forward to getting up every morning, sitting on the porch facing the ocean, and reading First King of Shannara for a few hours. Then, throughout the day, I would always gravitate back to that porch and pick up this book again. I just couldn't get enough of it. Terry Brooks has once again proved to me why he is one of my favorite authors. The story is packed with detail and the action sequences are extremely exciting. Because of the Warlock Lord's army marching south, the tension throughout the book is quite palpable.

Overall, I loved First King of Shannara and cannot wait to read The Sword of Shannara next. Even though I have read twice before, I cannot wait to do so again. That is when you know that you have found that really special author.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
