First Visit to Enchanted, Inc.

I stepped up to the desk and said, "I'm Kathleen Chandler. I have a ten o'clock appointment with Rodney Gwaltney of Personnel."

He ran a thumb down a giant book that lay open on his desk and said, "Ah, yes, Miss Chandler. We've been expecting you." He placed his palm on a crystal ball that sat on his desk and said softly. "Rod, your visitor is here." Now, that was an unusual intercom system. The crystal ball was held by a pewter dragon sculpture that looked like something I'd once seen on sale at a Renaissance festival. The crystal glowed, then the guard looked back at me, smiled, and said, "He'll be with you in a moment."

It didn't take Rod long at all to come down the sweeping staircase at the back of the lobby. "Katie, good to see you," he said. "Right this way." He escorted me toward the stairs, saying as he walked, "Unfortunately, we don't have elevators in this building. I hope you don't mind the stairs."

"My apartment's a walk-up. I think I'll manage," I said as I followed him.

If I'd been intrigued before, now I was downright curious. What kind of company would be based in a building like this? It was a pretty safe bet that I could rule out anything in the high-tech industry. I remembered what Owen had said the other day about predating computers. Something financial, maybe? That wouldn't be out of the ordinary around here. "Curiouser and curiouser," I muttered under my breath.

"What was that?" Rod asked.

"Nothing. Just feeling a bit like Alice."

We'd reached the top of the stairs and now faced a pair of doors almost as impressive as the front doors. "Well, Alice, welcome to Wonderland," he said as the doors swung open.

I'm not sure even Alice would have believed what I saw inside that room.

Synopsis

Kathleen "Katie" Chandler moved to Manhattan a year ago from Texas. She noticed strange looking people in New York, but just always assumed that that is what they were . . . strange. She saw people with wings and noticed that stone gargoyles on building moved around. What she didn't know is that she was immune to magic and really was seeing fairies and the gargoyle that normal people couldn't see for their true selves because they were masked in magic.

When she is noticed staring at a fairy, she is recruited by Rod and Owen, two employees of Enchanted, Inc. Not sure if she should accept the recruiting emails she is getting at work, but hating her job, she finally gives in an makes an appointment for an interview. But when she arrives at the building, a castle in the middle of Manhattan, she knows that there is something strange, yet exciting, about this company.

During the interview, Katie learns that his company sells magical spells. In fact, they have been selling magic for 1,000 years and their original boss has been brought back to help them over a problem they are having. The original boss turns out to be Merlin, the wizard from King Arthur's time.

It seems that a former employee of Enchanted, Inc. is now selling magic that can be quite harmful to the people it is used on. And now Katie is caught up in the middle of what may become the biggest magic war in a century.

Enchanted, Inc. by Shanna Swendson is the first fictional story about a magical company in the heart of Manhattan. The story focuses on Kathleen Chandler and her ability to adapt to this strange new world of magic and her new position within the company.

Review

Right from the beginning, I was enthralled with Enchanted, Inc. by Shanna Swendson. I instantly liked the main character and felt sorry for her working for an ogre of a boss. And to learn that magic is real . . . isn't that something we all dream of? To know that actual magic, not illusion, exists in the world would be a wondrous thing to discover. Well, this very thing is what Katie, the main character, has to come to terms with.

I found her journey into the world of magic to be both stimulating and exciting. The book moves along at a wonderful pace and I just could not put it down. As for trying to make Merlin fit in with skyscrapers and all of our modern convinces, I thought that was a stroke of brilliance.

Overall, Enchanted, Inc. ranks up there with some of the most highly enjoyable books I have read this year. Don't let this one pass you by. I wonder what will happen next in Once Upon Stilettos?

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
