Death Rained From the Sky

Thread! Fear rooted her to the ground. If only she could run fast enough to stay beyond the reach of it. She ran, one eye on the Dragon Stones, one for the ground ahead of her feet. She heard the whoosh, heard the fire lizards’ startled chirrups, saw the shadow and fell to the ground covering her head instinctively with her hands, her body taut for the first feel of flesh-scoring Thread. She smelt the fire-stone, and felt the air heavy against her body.

”Get on your feet, you silly fool! And hurry!”

Incredulously, Menolly looked up, right into the whirling eyes of a brown dragon.

Synopsis

Menolly, a young lady, lives in Half-Circle Sea Hold with her family. She was the apprentice to the Half-Circle Sea Hold Harper…until he died. Her father, Yanus, the Sea Holder, believes that women should not teach the young children the traditional songs.

After the new Harper arrives, and Menolly has been forbidden to participate in any kind of music, she runs away. She cannot take the cruelty of her family and her love for song is too much for her to suppress any longer. While traveling, she runs across some fire lizards and stumbles on the golden queen’s hatch, which is being threatened by an unusually high tide.

After helping the little queen save the eggs, Menolly impresses nine of the fire lizards. Now all she has to do is make it to another Hold without being scored by Thread and live there, away from her oppressing father and mother. But as she is traveling, she gets caught in the middle of a threadfall…with no place to go for safety.

Dragonsong is the first book of the Harper Halls of Pern Trilogy. It takes place in the middle of the Dragonriders of Pern Trilogy. There is a lot of tie-in to the Dragonrider series, but it is not necessary to have read these to enjoy this story. This is a story of a young woman who has one love…music. She has a talent for playing and making new music. But her father does not believe that this is a job for a woman and makes her feel ashamed of her talent. After slicing her hand open and realizing that she will never be allowed to play or sing again while living in Half-Circle Sea Hold, she runs away. Thus begins the new life on Menolly.

Review

Dragonsong is a fantastic fantasy tale. You instantly fall for Menolly and feel for her in her plight. You want so much for her to be able to live her dream. But everything seems to be against her, and she never gets any breaks.

The characters are very well written and the story is excellent. Right away, you get hooked into the tale and find that you cannot put the book. Although the story is not all that long, it is well worth reading for a fantasy lover.

Dragonsong is top-notch fantasy.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
