The Hedge Maze outside the Citadel of Light

Palin did not have much hope that the draconians would lose him in the maze, but he did hope that the maze's own powerful magic would protect him and Tas, perhaps hide them from the eyes of the monsters. His hope was going to be put to the test. More draconians had joined in the pursuit, driving now by anger and the desire for revenge.

"Stop a moment," Palin said to Tas, who had no breath left to answer. He nodded and gulped air.

The two had reached the first bend in the Hedge Maze. No point in going farther unless Palin knew whether or not the draconians were going to be able to come after them. He turned to watch.

The first several draconians dashed inside the Hedge Maze and almost immediately came to a stop. Branches spread across the path, stems shot up from the ground. Foliage grew at an astonishing rate. Within moments, the path on which Palin and Tas had walked was overgrown with shrubbery so thick the mage could no longer see the draconians.

Palin breathed a sigh of relief. He had been right. The magic of the Hedge Maze would keep out those who entered with evil intent. He had a momentary fear that the draconians might use their wings to lift themselves over the maze, but, as he looked up, flowering vines twined overhead to form a canopy that would hide him from sight. Fro the moment, he and Tas were safe.

"Whew! That was close!" said Tasslehoff happily. "I thought we were goners there for a moment. You are a really good wizard, Palin. I saw Raistlin cast lost of spells, but I don't believe he ever caused draconians to sizzle up like bacon before, thought I once saw him summon the Great Worm Catyrpelius. Did you ever hear about that one? Raistlin--"

A roar and a blast of flame interrupted Tasslehoff's tale. The bushes that had so recently grown to block the draconians burst into bright orange flame.

"The dragons!" Palin said with a bitter curse.

Synopsis

In the land of Ansalon, war is brewing. After the fall of the shield over Silvanesti, King Silvanoshei finds himself enamored with Mina, the Talon Leader of a force of Nights of Neraka, and the voice for the One God. Soon, most of the elves in Silvanost fall under the magical spell she weaves and find themselves praying to the One God. She soon leaves, allowing her Dark Knights to attack the city of Silvanost stealing all the items that they precious.

At the same time, the green dragon Beryl's forces march toward the Citadel of Light and Qualinesti. At the Citadel of Light, Palin and Tasslehoff use the Device of Time Journeying, an ancient artifact of magical powers, to help them escape from the attack of the draconians and dragons. Beryl's main reason for attacking the citadel was to retrieve the artifact. Palin and Tas are rescued by the wizard Dalamar, whose tower now inhabits a wooded area filled with the souls of the dead.

Goldmoon, in her new young body, travels to Solanthus and there meets up with Gerald, a Solamnic Knight that is pretending to be a Dark Knight so he can deliver a message from the elves asking for help, but is captured and treated as a spy. To make matters worse, Mina and her Dark Knights show up and lay siege to Solanthus. War is being waged across Ansalon, and no one seems to be able to stop it.

Dragons of a Lost Star is the second volume in The War of Souls trilogy, following Dragons of a Fallen Sun. It is a DragonLance fantasy tale of humans, elves, trolls, kenders, gnomes and the like. What used to be a happy world with all the races working together is no longer. All races seem to be at war with one another, and nothing seems right to the adventurous kender, Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

Review

Dragons of a Lost Star continues exactly from where Dragons of a Fallen Sun leaves off. Although the first half of the book is a builder with not a lot of action, there is plenty of fighting during the second half of the book to satisfy all fantasy readers.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman weave a wondrous tale of nations fighting to survive in a harsh world ruled by a few oversized dragons intent on ruling all of Ansalon. No person, creature, or nation will stand in their way. The mystery of who the One God is deepens as Mina continues her campaign of death.

The authors do a great job of keeping the reader guessing at whom this "god" really is. Is is a dragon? Is it a wizard? Is it really a god? The characters are well developed and I really enjoy reading about all of them. I truly hate it when a character I enjoy reading about dies. Who dies, you ask? Well, not everybody, but it sure seems like it. I can't tell you who, you will have to read the book to find out.

Dragons of the Lost Star is an excellent novel that shouldn't be missed by any fantasy lover. I can't wait to read the conclusion to the trilogy, Dragons of a Vanished Moon.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
