Lessa Flies Ramoth for the First Time

F'lar watched as the flyers obediently began a downward glide, the queen's wings arching and curving as she slowed her tremendous forward speed. Unfed or not, she could fly!

He mounted Mnementh, waving them on, down toward the feeding grounds. He caught a fleeting glimpse of Lessa, her face vivid with elation and rebellion. Ramoth landed, and Lessa dropped to the ground, gesturing the dragon to eat.

The girl turned then, watching Mnementh glide in and hover to let F'lar dismount. She straightened her shoulders, her chin lifted belligerently as her slender body gathered itself to face his censure. Her behavior was like that of any werling, anticipating punishment and determined to endure it, soundless. She was not the least bit repentant!

Admiration for this indomitable personality replaced the last trace of F'lar's anger. He smiled as he closed the distance between them.

Startled by his completely unexpected behavior, she took a half-step backward.

"Queens can, too, fly," she blurted out, daring him.

His grin broadened to suffuse his face, he put his hands on her shoulders and gave her an affectionate shake.

"Of course they can fly," he assured her, his voice full of pride and respect. "That's why they have wings!"

Synopsis

It has been 400 years since Thread, alien spores that consume all vegetation, have fallen from the passing Red Star. Two hundred years ago, the Thread did not fall as it should have. Because of this, the holds no longer feel that there is a need for the dragonriders and want the weyrs (dragon lairs) disbanded so they no longer have to pay tribute to the dragons and their riders.

In Ruatha Hold, Lessa is the legitimate heirs of the usurped hold and awaits the day when her line will rule again. But fate intervenes and she becomes weyrwoman for Benden Weyr and bonds with the new gold queen dragon, Ramoth. When F'lars bronze dragon, Mnementh mates with Ramoth on her first flight, F'lar becomes the new wyerleader for Benden Wyer. He believes that thread is coming and knows that they do not have nearly the thoudsands dragons they should have to fight the falling, burning, burrowing Thread from the Red Star.

When the Thread finally begins to fall, Lessa and F'lar must come up with some ingenious ways to save the planet Pern from this deadly menace.

Dragonflight is the first book of the Dragonriders of Pern Trilogy. Dragonflight is the first published book by Anne McCaffrey. Review

It has been 13½ years since I read this Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey. I remembered loving the early Pern books, and I was not disappointed by my second read of this book. In fact, I found the reading so enjoyable that I picked up the book any chance I had just to sink back into the story some and delve into the amazing world of Pern.

Anne McCaffrey spins a wonderful tale of dragons and men cooperating to save the planet from the ever deadly fall of Thread. It is nice to see dragons portrayed in a positive light. These are highly intelligent telepathic creatures that love their human riders. This story slowly builds to peak that made it impossible for me to put the book down until I have finished. The characters are quite superb and the story-telling should not be missed.

For and fantasy lover, Dragonflight is a must!

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
