The Coronation of Prince Kelson…

There were loud footsteps outside the cathedral now, and the people grew hushed with fearful expectation. As Corrigan, unaware of what was going on, continued with the investiture, held out the jeweled scepter of Gwynedd to Kelson, the cathedral doors swung open with a muffled crash, and a gust of icy wind whistled down the nave.

As Morgan turned his head slightly toward the rear of the church, there was no doubt in the mind what he would see. Nor was he disappointed.

He looked—and saw Charissa, Duchess of Tolan, Lady of the Silver Mists, the Shadowed One—silhouetted against the open doorway, veiled in pale gray and blue, shrouded in living mist which twined around her in a sinister aura.

Synopsis

Brione Haldane, the King of Gwynedd, dies mysteriously during a hunt. They say that it was a heart attack, but his best friend, Morgan, the General of the Gwynedd army, and half Deryni, knows that it was Dyryni magic that killed him.

With Morgan’s cousin, Monsignor Duncan McLain, at his side, they take Kelson aside before his coronation and walk him through the same rituals that Brione went through before he became King. This will enable Kelson to manipulate the small amount of magic that his father used.

Kelson’s mother, Jehana, is out to see Morgan killed because he has Deryni blood in him and she feels that is was his fault that her husband was killed. Kelson defends Morgan more than once, but his mother is relentless.

The Shadowed One, Charissa, knows that she should rule in Kelson’s place, since she is a true Deryni. She is ruthless in the pursuit of her goal, and nothing will stand in her way, not even a half Deryni like Morgan, and certainly not a poorly trained 14 year old boy about to become king.

Deryni Rising is the first book of The Chronicles of the Deryni trilogy. It is also the first book that Katherine Kurtz had published.

There is debate about which series should be read first, either this one or The Legends of Camber of Culdi trilogy, which take place 300 years before this story, or this one. According to the author, the books should be read in the order that they were originally published.

This is a fantasy tale about a young man who has to step into his dead father’s shoes to become king before he is ready. But he is a strong lad and willingly does so. He has the help of the dead king’s best friend. His enemy is a woman that he has never met before, but will soon get to know.

Review

I read this series years ago and remember liking it, but remembered little else. The book starts off slowly, but it doesn’t seem to matter.

Deryni Rising book is so well written, the lack of action is barely noticeable. The thing that makes this story work so well is the great characters that Katherine Kurtz has created. These characters are very well written and the storyline is enticing. You are instantly drawn into the story and will find it hard to put the book down.

I found myself looking forward to opening Deryni Rising and read more about Kelson and Morgan.

I look forward to picking up the next book in this trilogy.

I rated this book a 9½ out of 10.
