The goblins muttered something among themselves…

”Eenegash!” it said again, more forcefully, and it pointed its sword at the staff, then at the riverbank.

”I hardly think so,” Elbryan replied, smiling widely and shaking his head. In a barely noticeable movement, the ranger pulled the feathered tip from the bow, tucking it and the bowstring into his belt.

The goblin gave a threatening growl, Elbryan shook his head again.

The creature rushed to close half the distance and prodded with its sword, a movement more of intimidation than an attack. But it was the creature who was surprised.

Elbryan grabbed the staff, right hand over left, reversed his grip with his left as the pole started moving, and snapped it across so quickly in front of him that the goblin never had a chance to move. The staff connected simultaneously on the sword and the goblin’s hand, knocking the weapon from the creature’s grasp and launching it a dozen feet away. The subtle shift, still too quick for the creature to dodge, and Elbryan stabbed the tapered end out straight, striking the goblin on its sloping forehead right above and between the eyes, laying it out straight in the stream.

With a whoop of delight, the other goblins, predictably, came on.

Synopsis

Deep in the Timbelands, lays the sleepy little village named Dundalis. Elbryan Wyndon, a boy of 13, and his girl friend, Jilseponie “Pony”, await the return of the hunting party. When the party does return, the kids are shocked to see a dead goblin hanging from one of the poles.

Shortly thereafter, the village is attacked by goblins and fomorian giants. While the entire town is being slaughtered, Elbyran is saved by the elves because his uncle was a ranger and they need someone new to train. Elbryan spends six years learning to be the next ranger and living with the elves of AndurBlough Inninness. Meanwhile, Pony escaped death at the hands of the goblins and ends up a barmaid in Palmaris with no remembrance of what happened in Dundalis.

After an incident with her new husband, she finds her marriage annulled and ends up in the military, where she seems to be the only one serious about guarding the coast against the Powries, a warlike race of seafaring dwarves that wear caps of human skin on the heads that have been dipped in the blood of every one that they have killed.

In St.-Mere-Abelle, a young man is admitted and found to be the most talented person to ever wield the stones. Avelyn Desbris is selected, along with 3 others, to journey to a secret island to collect to stones of power when they fall. When he returns from his year-length journey, he learns the truth about the evil that has invaded the halls of the monastery. He takes the stones and flees. He soon discovers that the dactyl demon has awakened and is gathering his army of goblins, giants and dwarves wipe the humans off the face of the planet.

Soon, all three of the main characters meet and form an alliance. They are joined by Brandwarden, a centaur, and vow to bring down the demon. But to do this, they must make their way to Mount Alda, through thousands of the enemy troops.

The Demon Awakens is the first book in the DemonWars trilogy by R.A. Salvatore.

Review

The Demon Awakens is a fantasy tale that must be read by all lovers of fantasy. R.A. Salvatore creates some characters that the user grows to love and some that you will fear. The story is fast-paced and a fun read. Even though the story switches between the three main characters, I found that I didn’t mind this at all. Often, with a lot of stories, the user only wants to read about one of the characters. Not so with these characters. All three have interesting tales to be told and the user does not feel gypped when the storyline changes from chapter to chapter.

I have read a lot of fantasy tales. I had never read R.A. Salvatore before. But once I started reading this book, I realized that I had found a new author that I really liked. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

The Demon Awakens is an excellent story that really kept me entranced. I couldn’t put it down at night and couldn’t wait to read more when I awoke. I highly recommend it.

Read it! You will love it!

I rated this book a 9½ out of 10.
