Sacrifices for the Sea God, Burash

The assassin kicked bones aside to expose manacles set into the rock, snapping them about Bracht and Calandryll’s ankles before cutting the cords that bound their hands.

Bracht stooped instantly, testing the chains. From above came laughter and the priest’s booming voice.

”To stout to break, those bonds. Save Burash grant you mercy, you pay for your affront.”

The water rose, creeping up their legs, overtopping their boots. Lapping ripples touched Calandryll’s face and he spat salt water from his mouth, craning his head back, seeking to hold lips and nose clear of the flow. He heard Bracht shout, “Courage!,” the cry abruptly cut off by a dreadful choking.

In moments, the level was risen above Calandryll’s head, his ragged breath sucking in not air, but water. He floated, turning this way and that as blind panic set him to thrashing, arms flailing wild as he sought hopelessly to thrust his head upwards, into the air.

Calandryll felt death touch him . . .

Synopsis

Calandryll, Bracht and Katya pursue their former employer who now has the Arcanum. They have discovered that Varent is actually Rhythemun, an ancient evil sorcerer that was born many centuries ago. Rhythemun plans on using the Arcanum to wake the Mad God, who will destroy the world.

The prophesized three continue to be true to their pledge to see the evil book destroyed. To do this they must overtake Rhythemun, who is months ahead of them on the trail, and then take the book from him…no easy task. Little known to them, Anomius, another evil wizard, but not so ancient, believes Calandryll and Bracht to have a different book. They made a fool of him in the first book and he would see them dead and take the book. To this end, he creates a Revenant, a woman in this case, whose heart has been removed by magic and replaced by enchanted clay. Nothing can stop her in her quest to find Calandryll and slay him, therefore quenching the wizard’s thirst for revenge.

Dark Magic is the second book in the Godwars Trilogy by Angus Wells.

Review

Dark Magic picks up right where Forbidden Magic ended. Like the first book in the trilogy, and it actually is a trilogy, it is a fast-paced fantasy adventure with magic and swordplay.

I liked this book almost as much as I did Forbidden Magic. The action was not quite as intense as it was in the first book, but still I found the book to be highly enjoyable and a blast to read.

I find that I am really comfortable with Angus Wells’ writing style and look forward to reading other books that he has written. And one thing I always enjoy finding in a Fantasy book is a map so I can follow the characters, and this map is top-notch.

Dark Magic is another excellent book by Angus Wells. How will this trilogy end in Wild Magic? I cannot wait to find out.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
