Dream Flying over Ero

"Where else would you like to go?" Arkoniel asked.

"To my mother's house."

"Ah, yes. Back up to the Palatine we go." He guided Tobin to the warren of walled houses that lay between the Old and New Palaces.

"Mama's is that one," Tobin said. "I know it by the golden griffins along the roofline."

"Yes," Rhius had taught his son well.

As they circled closer, the vision faltered again, but this time the problem did not lie with the boy. Arkoniel felt a growing uneasiness as the shape of the house and its grounds became more distinct. He could pick out the yards and outbuildings, and the courtyard where the tall chestnut tree stood, marking the dead twin's grave. As they drew closer, however, it withered before his eyes. Gnarled bare branches reached up to snare him like clawed fingers, just as the roots had held Tobin in his vision by the sea.

"By the Light--!" he gasped, trying to end the vision before Tobin saw. It was ended for him as a blast of cold buffeted them both. The vision collapsed, leaving him reeling and momentarily blind.

"No, no!" Tobin cried.

Arkoniel felt the boy's hand yanked from his. Something struck him a stinging blow on his cheek and the pain broke the last of the magic, clearing his mind and his eyes.

The entire room was shaking. The wardrobe doors banged open, then slammed again with a crash. Chests jittered against the walls, and objects flew through the air in all directions.

"Stop it!" Tobin cried. "Go away, Wizard! Please! Get Out!"

Synopsis

An ancient prophecy states that the land of Skala will be prosperous if a specific line of warrior queens rules the land. For three centuries, the people of Skala have lived comfortable lives and have not worried about much. But when the mad queen dies, her son, Erius, takes the throne. Over the years, he kills off all women in his line that could cause any potential threat and bear a girl.

When his sister, Ariani, has twins, Erius is happy to hear that the boy has lived and the girl has died. Little does he know that the wizards, Aya and Arkoniel, summoned Lhel, a witch, to perform magic that will be undetectable by other wizards. The first baby had been a girl. When the boy was born, the intent was to kill it before he took his first breath. The baby boy did get the first breath in before he was smothered, thereby awakening his soul. Lhel then performed her magic.

When Lord Rhius' and Princess Araini's children are brought downstairs for viewing by King Erius, he finds a living boy, Tobin, and a dead girl. As Tobin grows into a young man on his father's country estate, he is plagued by his mother who spends her days making dolls with no faces. The demon, or the ghost of his dead brother, haunts the household, and especially Tobin.

When the king finally pays a visit seven years after Tobin was born, Ariani tries to escape her brother by jumping out of the tower window with her son. Aya realized that Tobin is being held a virtual prisoner on Rhius' land, sends Arkoniel to him as a tutor and finds a companion for Tobin named Ki. Becoming fast friends, they grow toward young adulthood under Arkoniel and Tharin's watchful eyes.

The time is fast approaching when Tobin will have to move to Ero and join his cousin as a Companion himself. Little does he know that this move will be sooner than he thinks and change his life completely.

The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling is the first book of three in the Tamir Trilogy. It is the story of a young girl, who thinks she is a boy, growing up in a time when the Red and Black Plague runs rampant through the land. Even though Tobin is a prince, he has never thought of himself that way. Growing up without friends, and haunted by his dead brother, he does not fit in well with others his own age. When Ki comes to live with him, his entire life changes and he finally begins to understand how fun life can be. No one has ever told him he is a girl and of the role he / she must play in the future...for only a queen can end the horrible blight that has befallen Skala, and he / she is the only living female who can do it.

Review

Right from the beginning, I couldn't put down The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling. The idea that a girl must hide in the guise of a boy until she are old enough to fulfill a prophecy really intrigued me. Having already become familiar with the land of Skala in the Nightrunner Series, I was happy to learn that this story took place long before the saga of Seregil and Alex.

The Bone Dolls' Twin covers the first twelve years of Tobin's life. The story is totally engrossing and the tale keeps the reader turning the pages until late in the night. Flewelling's story-telling has improved a great deal since Luck in the Shadows in that the pace has been perfected and the characters more developed.

I found that I really liked both Tobin and Ki and cannot wait to read about more of their adventures as Tobin comes closer to fulfilling the prophecy.

Overall, this The Bone Doll's Twin is an excellent read that will keep any lover of Fantasy happy for hours upon hours. I am highly anticipating the next book in the series, Hidden Warrior.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
