Face To Face With Death

The Rebel officer raised his electrobinoculars and focused on the objects resolutely advancing through the snow, looking like creatures out of the past… But they were war machines, each of them stalking like enormous ungulates on four jointed legs—the Empire’s All Terrain Armored Transports!

The officer grabbed his comlink. “Rogue Leader—Incoming! Point Zero Three!”

”Echo Station Five-Seven, we’re on our way.” Even as Luke Skywalker replied, an explosion sprayed ice and snow around the officer and his terrified men.

Review

Three years have passed since Luke Skywalker and the Rebels blew up the Death Star. Now stationed on Hoth, the ice planet, Luke is attacked by a Wompa Ice Creature. After escaping and collapsing in the snow, he is visited by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan tells him to go to Dagobah and seek out the Jedi Master. In the meantime, an Empire probe has found the Rebel base. The base is soon attacked and a ferocious battle is fought, separating Luke and Artoo-Detoo from Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia and See-Threepio. While Luke travels to Dagobah, Han Solo and crew are pursued by the Star Destroyer “Avenger” into an asteroid field. The Emperor informs Darth Vader that Luke is a threat and must be destroyed. Darth Vader convinces the Emperor that he can turn Luke to the dark side of the force and have him join the Empire as a powerful ally. As bait, he plans on capturing the Millenium Falcon. After Luke crash lands on Dagobah, he meets the Jedi Master, Yoda, and begins his training. He soon has a vision of his friends in trouble and fears they are in mortal danger. He tells the Jedi Master that he must leave. Yoda informs him that to leave now would surely end and chance of Luke becoming a Jedi Knight. So, Luke must make the hardest decision of his life, continue his training or save his friends.

This is a book based upon the second Star Wars movie, Episode 5. Now, you might think, “Why should I read the book? I’ve seen the movie ten times.” Well, so have I. But, I still enjoyed reading the book and got really tied up with the last half of the book. For any Science Fiction or Star Wars fan, this is a must-read. It gives you a little more insight to the movie and I learned a few things that help me to prepare for the new movie coming out soon. While the dialog is sometimes a little campy, especially between Han and Leia, I really enjoyed reading this book. There is not much I can say about the book, except that it is a good compliment to the movie. If you haven’t seen the movie before, which I find rather hard to believe, this is a good science fiction story with action, love and adventure. It is a fairly fast read.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
