Moonsilver is Hurt by Hunters

Heart made her way back through the forest. Fear weighed her feet and chilled her skin.

When she saw Moonsilver standing beside his mother, her spirits leaped upward.

But then she got close enough to see the blood streaming down his hind leg.

The arrow lay half buried in the dirt on the slope above Moonsilver. It had cut a long gash on his right leg, just above the hock.

Moonsilver's wounded leg would not bear his weight. He stumbled against his mother, then stood trembling.

Heart found her gathering sack where she had dropped it.

She tore the soft cloth into wide strips.

Then she looked intently at Avamir. "Tell him he has to let me do this," she pleaded, wishing the mare really could understand her.

Avamir pawed the ground uneasily.

"I have to bind it," Heart said, trying not to cry, trying not to stare at the blood staining the pine needles.

She talked to Moonsilver in a low, murmuring voice.

Moonsilver looked at Heart. His eyes were distant, glassy. She could tell he was in terrible pain.

She risked a single step forward.

Synopsis

Heart Avamir is still hiding in the forest with her two unicorns, Avamir and Moonsilver. Moonsilver is a wild colt that doesn't let Heart pet him. One day, while frolicking through the forest, some hunters spot him. Thinking he is a white deer, they try to kill him, and only end up hurting him. Heart realizes what has happened and leads the hunters away pretending to be Moonsilver. When she returns, she takes both of the unicorns to the cave where they have been living.

In the morning, Moonsilver is worse. Heart's only choice to to try and take Moonsilver to see Ruth Oakes, the local healer that lives just outside of Ash Grove. But to do that, she must travel through the middle of Ash Grove without being seen with a couple of horses, let alone a unicorn. Sneaking through the small town at night, they finally arrive at Ruth's cottage.

As time goes by, Moonsilver begins to heal. Simon Pratt spies Heart one morning and demands his horses back so he can sell them to the local knacker. Heart tells him that she will never return to live with him and that he will never get the horses. When Heart tries to sneak the unicorns back through Ash Grove to their cave, Simon and the local authority are waiting for them.

Review

The Silver Thread is another fun and exciting chapter in the life of Heart Avamir and her two unicorns, Avamir and Moonsilver. With Moonsilver injured by a hunter's arrow, she must somehow transport him to Ruth Oakes to be healed. But with hunters look for the unicorn, and enemies around, Heart must make sure they are unseen.

The second book in the Unicorn's Secret Series is a great addition to the story set up in the first book, Moonsilver. The pace of the book is very fast and early chapter readers will zip through the book as they find themselves worrying about the welfare of Heart and the unicorns. The artwork by Omar Rayyan is wonderful and really adds to the story. I found this to be a really nice fantasy tale that can be enjoyed by all ages. Overall, The Silver Thread is a great story and I look forward to reading the next book in this series, The Silver Bracelet.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.
