Gypsies

The next day Heart started playing the flute every moment she could.

"You are ready," Zim said a few days later. He showed her a song. It was harder than the scales.

Heart practiced. Once she could play the song, she found herself adding notes to make it prettier.

Then she made up a song on her own.

Kip loved it.

He came running whenever she played it.

Zim grinned. He told her to give Kip a bit of bread every time he came to hear the tune.

Heart did. Soon Kip leaped into a mad dash the instant he heard the first few notes. Moonsilver noticed. He began to follow Kip.

It became a race between them.

They would slide to a stop in front of Heart.

Then Moonsilver would go back to graze with Avamir.

Kip would wander through the wagons.

He played with all the dogs, but Sadie adored him. He followed Binney asking for leftover stew.

They came to a village named Fallbrook. It was small, its hills covered with fruit trees and farms.

It's prettier than Ash Grove, Heart thought.

The people had better homes.

Heart walked close to the unicorns. They seemed calm--much calmer than she was.

"We'd like to show Moonsilver tonight," Binney said. "Have you planned your act?"

Heart shook her head, blushing.

Binney patter Heart's cheek. "Let us do it, then. You can change it later to suit yourself." She touched Heart's arm. "Look."

Heart glanced around.

People had stopped. They were staring at Moonsilver.

Synopsis

Heart Avamir is still hiding in the cave outside out Ash Grove with the unicorns, Avamir,  Moonsilver and Kip the dog. Ruth brings them food when she can. But the forest is now heavily patrolled by Lord Dunraven's men, and Ruth is not able to return again.

One evening, gypsies arrive with the intention of spending the night in Heart's cave. When they see her standing in front of the entrance, they decide to camp in the field. Heart finally goes down to their camp where she is accepted by this band of wandering performers. Heart convinces them that Moonsilver is a horse and that she has glued a horn to his forehead.

Heart decides to travel with the gypsies to get out of Lord Dunraven's land. She soon learns how to play the flute, which both Kip and Moonsilver love. Far tot the north, in a town that they are putting on a performance for, Davey, a young gypsy boy, falls from the high wire and is seriously hurt. Moonsilver approaches the boy and heals him with the touch of his horn. Realizing that people now know that Moonsilver is a real unicorn, Heart has to leave her new friends behind. Will she never find peace?

The Silver Bracelet is the third book in the Unicorn's Secret Series. This book was written by Kathleen Duey and illustrated by Omar Rayyan. This series is intended for young readers ages 7 to 9.

Review

Well, I was wondering how long Heart could stay in that cave of hers. I am glad that Kathleen Duey was able to get her out of it and traveling with the gypsies in The Silver Bracelet. Heart really needed some friends and to get away from Ash Grove.

Once again, the pencil work by Omar Rayyan is beautiful and the story by Kathleen Duey will have young readers enraptured. After all, who hasn't wanted to join the circus at one time or another? What is also nice for Heart is that she gets to see more of the world and soon comes to realize that there is more than just Ash Grove. But with the gypsies and the townspeople realize that Moonsilver is a real unicorn, Heart knows that she must leave again. Too bad,

I really like the gypsies that Heart made some new friends. Personally, I think that Heart is going to look for the place that unicorns come from. Let's hope so. That will be really cool if she brings Avamir and Moonsilver to the rest of their kind. I look forward to finding out what happens next in The Mountains of the Moon.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.
