In Lord Dunraven's Castle

Lord Dunraven!

Heart heard heavy footsteps in the hallway.

She spun around and ran out of the room.

She fled down the corridor, staying bent over, keeping close to the wall, and hoping the shadows would hide her.

The round-topped door swung open easily.

The night air rushed in, cool and clean. Heart hesitated just long enough to glance back up the passage.

She could still hear muffled voices and the sound of heavy boots. Had he seen her?

She slipped outside and closed the door.

Then there was only the silence of the night.

Heart ran again, her pulse pounding in her throat. Every second she expected to hear angry shouts.

She ran until her lungs ached. The road slanted uphill past the village, but she didn't slow down.

She was back in the trees before she realized she still had the strange paper box in her hand.

She stumbled to a halt and stared at it in the moonlight.

She had not meant to take it.

She wasn't a thief!

Would Dunraven notice it was gone? Would he send his guards to find her?

Heart kicked at the ground, furious at herself.

Synopsis

After leaving the band of gypsies behind, Heart, Avamir,  Moonsilver and Kip the dog hear someone coming down the road. They hide in the bushes and discover that it is Simon Pratt, the man that raised Heart. She hears him mumbling about her and follows him to Lord Dunraven's Castle. Sneaking inside, she overhears Simon talking about her and the blanket she was originally found in. Lord Dunraven reveals Heart's baby blanket and she is shocked to find that it has an image of two rearing unicorns on it. Heart also discovers a book with the same rearing unicorns on the cover and accidentally takes it when she flees the castle. Heart does not know what a book is because she has never seen one and she doesn't know how to read.

Ten days later, Heart stumbles upon the same band of gypsies that she lived with earlier. Knowing that Lord Dunraven has men looking for the unicorn that cured an injured gypsy boy, Heart realizes that she cannot remain with them long. If only she could think of a way to trick Lord Dunraven's men into thinking that the rumor of the healing unicorn was not true, then she could remain with her friends and stop running.

The Mountains of the Moon is the fourth book in the Unicorn's Secret Series. This book was written by Kathleen Duey and illustrated by Omar Rayyan. This series is intended for young readers ages 7 to 9.

Review

Poor Heart Avamir. She is constantly on the run with no real home. Traveling with the two unicorns and her dog, she has to keep and eye out for Lord Dunraven's men. But with every adventure, she unravels more about her past. She wonders what the two rearing unicorns on her baby blanket means. Now that she has a book with the same rearing unicorns on the cover, she wants to know what it says inside. If only she could read! At least she is able to find that same band of gypsies and be there for a bit. It is the only place she has ever really felt welcome.

Kathleen Duey continues the wonderful adventure of Heart in The Mountains of the Moon. This fourth book in the Unicorn's Secret Series is more about discovery than adventure. The book reveals more secrets about herself that Heart must somehow figure out how to solve. The black and white artwork by Omar Rayyan is beautiful, as it is in all the books.

Young readers both male and female should really enjoy this book. It is the perfect book for them to practice reading aloud to their parents. Overall, The Mountains of the Moon, is an excellent early chapter novel and I cannot wait to find out what happens next in The Sunset Gates. I sure hope that Heart learns how to read.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
