A Baby Unicorn is Born

Suddenly, Avamir groaned, her whole body trembled with effort.

Heart saw two tiny hooves emerge.

The next push brought spindly front legs and a muzzle small enough to drink from a teacup.

Heart held her breath.

Avamir made an odd sound, somewhere between pain and joy. She strained again.

The foal slid into the world and lay still on the ground.

Then it curled like a fish without air.

Heart frantically wiped away the birth water from its nostrils and eyes. She soaked one rag and picked up another.

The foal wriggled in her arms.

Avamir turned to lick at her baby.

Heart kept rubbing. Together they dried the foal and helped it stand on its own skinny legs. The foal's coat was purest white. In the moonlight, it looked silvery.

"Moonsilver," Heart whispered, and smiled.

It was the perfect name.

Synopsis

Heart Avamir has no family. Well, at least she doesn't know who her parents are. When Heart was a baby, she was found beside the river under some cottonwood trees wrapped in a blanket by Simon Pratt. He never named her, just called her, "Girl."

Now, five years later, Heart lives a few miles outside the town of Ash Grove with Simon. None of the other children will have anything to do with her. Heart does have one friend, though. Her name is Ruth Oakes, she is the local healer and is also the one that named her Heart Avamir. Whenever she can, Heart likes to spend time with Ruth learning about herbs and roots.

One day, while working with Simon, Heart spots a white horse across a field. She is able to capture it and bring it home. The horse is dirty and very thin and she names it Avamir. Simon is only interested in turning the horse over to the local knacker, who would kill the horse for tallow. Heart convinces Simon that the horse would be worth more if she made it healthy again.

One day, Heart notices that Avamir is pregnant. When the foal is born, Heart names him Moonsilver because he was born at night and his hair is the color of silver. As Moonsilver grows, the bump on his forehead soon becomes a tiny horn. Now understanding the scar on Avamir's forehead, and realizing both are unicorns, Heart understands that she must not let Simon take them both to the knacker and must lead the unicorns to freedom.

Moonsilver is the first book in the Unicorn's Secret Series. This book was written by Kathleen Duey and illustrated by Omar Rayyan. This series is intended for young readers ages 7 to 9.

Review

Moonsilver is an entertaining book about an outcast girl of six years finding a unicorn. When the young unicorn is born, Heart realizes that she must save them both at any cost. Kathleen Duey has created a wonderful little story for Early Chapter readers to enjoy. The story is simple, yet highly enjoyable.

The readers will fall in love with Heart. At first they will feel sorry for her because she is in a bad situation, you know, being left behind by her parents. Later, they will wish to be her when she realizes that she has two unicorns. After all, who wouldn't want a unicorn or two?

The pencil artwork by Omar Rayyan is very detailed and adds a great deal to the telling of the story. Moonsilver is a wonderful start to a series that promises to transport a young reader to a world of simpler times. Overall, I was thoroughly entertained by the story about Heart and Avamir and cannot wait to find out what happens next in book two in this series, The Silver Thread.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
