Synopsis

Babymouse has never been able to keep a pet very long. Her fifth goldfish has just died and she really wants another pet. So, her mother lets her buy a hamster from the local pet store. Babymouse, being who she is, leaves the cage door open when it is time for her to eat dinner. When she returns to her room, the hamster has escaped.

For the next week, Babymouse returns to the pet store everyday to get a new pet . . . because she loses each one the same day she buys it. She buys a turtle, a ferret, a salamander, a hermit crab, a Venus flytrap, and even some sea monkeys. Little does she know that they are all hanging out under her bed having a party. Even her fourth goldfish, who didn't die, just disappeared, is under there.

One day, Wilson suggests to Babymouse that she have an ant farm (you can guess what is going to happen). Wilson and Babymouse build the ant farm, gather up some local ants from outside, and fill the farm. That night, the ants escape. Sigh . . . of course they do.

Later that day, a dog without any identification tag walks up to a depressed Babymouse. Babymouse's mom says that she can keep the dog until they find the real owner. After naming him Buddy, who then proceeds to chew up all of Babymouse's shoes, she decides that he needs some training.

Will Babymouse, who never seems to be able to keep a pet, turn Buddy into a well-behaved dog? Or will Buddy escape into the night just like all of her other pets?

Review

Poor Babymouse. She just doesn't seem to be able to keep her pets alive. After all, Babymouse is a little flighty, always daydreaming about how wonderful life could be. Is she really capable of taking car of a dog? Gosh, I sure hope so because caring for a dog is a lot of work.

Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm have created another amazing story featuring the ever- delectable Babymouse. Babymouse is the perfect role-model for young girls. Does she do everything right the first time she tries? No, Babymouse is not infallible. In fact, she makes lots of mistakes. Hopefully, she learns from her mistakes and becomes a better person . . . I mean a mouse.

The artwork in Babymouse: Puppy Love is brilliant and the story is very engaging. After all, what child doesn't want their very own dog? A dog loves you without reservations. A dog will follow you where ever you go. A dog only wants to spend time with you. Of course, if your dog is bigger than you are, like Buddy is bigger than Babymouse, there could be a few problems with handling the dog . . . like when you are taking him for a walk and he sees a squirrel. Hang on for your life!

Overall, Babymouse: Puppy Love is another terrific addition to the wonderfully entertaining world of Babymouse. This book, like all the books in the Babymouse series, is very compelling and early chapter readers will read it over and over again. No author could ask for a greater compliment.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
