"Our baby-sitters are beasts," Carmen said.

"They're not just baby-sitters, "Juni pointed out. "They're also spies."

"You're right," Carmen said. "We have to go to OSS and get help."

"Let's get out of here," Juni said, leaping to his feet.

But Carmen stayed put. Her forehead was creased with worry and deep thought.

"Unless..." she said.

"Unless what?" Juni said. "Devlin's gotta hear about this, Carmen. There's not a minute to lose."

"Juni," Carmen said, getting to her feet and going pale. "Devlin specifically sent these new agents over here. Maybe...maybe he knew that Kitty and Octavian were mutants."

"But why would Devlin do that?" Juni said.

"Who know?" Carmen said. "Maybe the OSS has gone evil! And they're using these animal agents to take us out."

"I can't believe that!" Juni said.

"Well, the other scenario," Carmen said, "is that our baby-sitters are double agents. They're out to take the OSS down--from the inside."

"The only way to find out for sure is to head to HQ," Juni said, clenching his fists. "We've got to get out of here. Now!"

"So soon?"

Carmen and Juni gasped and turned to the voice.

Kitty Lieder was poised in the doorway.

Her back was arched threateningly.

Her green eyes had squinted to evil slits.

Her long, red nails were flashing.

Kitty Lieder wasn't about to let Carmen and Juni go anywhere. Not without a catfight!

Synopsis

When Carmen and Juni's parents, Ingrid and Gregorio Cortez, are sent away on a mission to Brazil to check out some alligator people, the director of OSS sends some baby-sitters over to the Cortez house to watch over Carmen and Juni. But there is something funny about the baby-sitters, Kitty Lieder and Octavian Buss.

The new spy baby-sitters teach the spy kids some new fighting and training techniques. Juni, who happens to be allergic to animals, cannot stop sneezing when he gets close to Kitty. One night, he sneaks downstairs and sees Kitty and Octavian in their true forms, her as a cat and him as an octopus. They are mutants! Part animal and part human.

When he is discovered, the mutant spies try to captures them. Carmen and Juni escape to their treehouse and realize that they must warn Director Devlin about the infiltration. Or, did Devlin send these mutant spies on purpose? If so, why?

Review

I find that I loved the first Spy Kids movie. The second movie got a little too silly for me with the Giggles, but was still an enjoyable flick. This Spy Kids Adventures book continues the tradition of interesting gadgets, made by Machete of course, thrilling chases and exciting action. Once again, the Spy Kids find themselves falling into trouble as mutant spies are out to take over OSS. Only the Spy Kids can stop them.

A New Kind of Super Spy is a fun story that all readers can enjoy. You need not have seen the movies to understand what the book is about, but it will help to have done so. The action is quick to start and never lets up. Carmen and Juni are well-written and any kid will love reading about them.

My only complaint was an inconsistency in the timeline. At the end of the second movie, Gregorio becomes director of OSS. This book obviously takes place after the second movie, so why is Director Devlin still in the book? Maybe the author needed some way to get both of the parents out of the way for the beginning of the story and couldn't do it with Gregorio as Director. To any fan, this will be a tad bit confusing.

Overall, A New Kind of Super Spy is a fun read. Any fan of the Spy Kids movies will love this book.

I rated this book a 7½ out of 10.
