Dragon Fight Over the Skies Above Sanction

Razor anticipated the Red's attack. The Blue veered off, flipping over backward to avoid the blast of flame that came so close it singed the scales on his belly.

The world reeled beneath Galdar's horns. The minotaur's stomach rolled. Dangling upside down in the harness that held him in the saddle, he clung frantically to the pommel with one hand, his weapon with the other. The harness had been built for human dragonriders, not for a minotaur. Galdar could only hope that the straps held his weight.

Razor rolled out of his turn. Galdar was upright again, the world was back the where it was supposed to be. He looked hastily about to see what had become of Mina. For a moment, he could not find her, and his heart nearly burst with fear.

"Mina!" he shouted.

"Below us!" Razor called out.

She was very far below them, flying close to the ground, flying underneath Malys, who was now caught between the two of them.

Malys's attention fixed on the Blue. A lazy flap of her wings and suddenly she was driving straight for them. Razor turned tail, beat his wings frantically.

"Fly, damn you!" Galdar snarled, although he could see that Razor was using every ounce of strength to try to outdistance the large red dragon.

Galdar looked back over his shoulder to see that the race was hopeless, lost before it could be won. Razor gasped for breath. His wings pumped. The muscles of the dragon's body flexed and heaved. Malys was barely even puffing. She seemed to fly effortlessly. Her jaws parted, fangs gleamed. She meant to snap the Blue's spine, dislodge his rider, send Galdar falling thousands of feet to his death on the rocks below.

Galdar gripped the pike.

"We're not going to make it!" he shouted at Razor. "Turn and close with her!"

The blue dragon wheeled. Galdar looked into Malys's eyes. He gripped the pike, prepared to launch it down her throat.

Malys opened her jaws, but instead of snapping at the Blue, she gave a gasp.

Wielding the dragonlance, Mina struck Malys in the belly. The lance sliced through the outer layers of red scales, ripped open a gash in the dragon's gut.

Review

The land of Ansalon is in turmoil. Mina has squashed Qualinesti, conquered Solanthus, killed three of the four great dragons, and now marches toward Sanction. Nothing seems to be able to stand in her way. She takes with her the body of Goldmoon in a sarcophagus and the living dead bodies of the wizards Palin and Dalamar. Gerald, unable to do much under the watchful eye of the minotaur, Galdar, is assigned to guard the king of the Silvanesti, Silvanoshei, who is madly in love with Mina. Meanwhile, the King Gilthas and his Qualinesti march across the Plains of Dust and receive a lukewarm greeting for the Silvanesti, their cousins. The Silvanesti are hiding out in the forest because they cannot enter Silvenost for the Black Knights stationed there. But as Mina prepares to attack Sanction, the elves begrudgingly unite and head north under the leadership of Alhana Starbreeze, King Silvanoshei's mother. After they have left their homeland, a horde of minotaurs descends upon Silvanost to kill any of the elves that remain and to support the Black Knights stationed there. The elves heading north toward Sanction do not know of this, or of the ogre trap they are walking into to. After Mina takes Sanction, all is right for the One God, Takhisis, to take her mortal form and rule the land. No one will be spared.

This is the third volume in The War of Souls trilogy, following Dragons of a Fallen Sun and Dragons of a Lost Star. It is a DragonLance fantasy tale of humans, elves, ogres, kenders, gnomes and the like. What used to be a happy world with all the races working together is no longer. All races seem to be at war with one another, and nothing seems right to the adventurous kender, Tasslehoff Burrfoot as a Joan of Arc-like villainess carries out the word of The One God.

This book continues exactly from where Dragons of a Lost Star leaves off. I became involved in the story right away and zoomed through the book. A character that wasn't used very must in the two preceding stories now becomes a main character; Mirror the blind, silver dragon. I really liked reading about him and his struggle to figure out how to help defeat Queen Takhisis. This story doesn't move along as fast at the previous two books, but does have the distinction of finishing The War of Souls trilogy. Once again, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman spin a tale of fantasy that is hard to put down. With the entire DragonLance world turned upside-down with the chaos Mina has created, the authors have created a tale that will forever change Ansalon. The War of Souls trilogy is a wonderful addition to the world of DragonLance, a world that Weis and Hickman created when they published the first book in the  DragonLance Chronicles in November of 1984. So, if you are looking for a fantasy tale with elves, humans, dwarves and more filled with deceit, treachery and hope, pick up this trilogy and you won't be disappointed.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
