Synopsis

'Toons for Our Times is the second collection of Bloom County comic strips. The Sunday comic strips now appear in color, but are clumped into two sections and do not follow the dailies in their designated spots, which can be a little confusing if the Sunday was in reference to the previous week's happenings. All of the dailies appear in black and white.

The following storylines appear in this book: Illegal "Bill the Cat" Tote Bags, "The Making of an American Stinker" - The Steve Dallas Story, Independent "Meadow" Party, Binkley's chemical waste dump, Milo's space shuttle dream, Journalist X, Pistachio's Junior Prom, Binkley the Jedi Master, The Great Snake Massacre, The Cartoonist's Life, Franklin the Hacker, Steve and the Dentist, Portnoy's Mid-Life Crisis, The Bloom County US Festival, and Steve Dallas - Hacker?

Bloom County became very popular in the early 1980's. The characters that Berke Breathed created are a lot of fun to read about. A couple of new characters are added this time around like: Alphonzo - the new black kid to the group (doesn't really have a chance to stand out before he is replaced), Franklin (Alphonzo's replacement) - a brainy black kid who is a computer hacker and raises havoc as he pirates his way into may secure systems, Pistachio - a young woman and a Junior in high school, and Limekiller - a smoking, scruffy Englishman who runs for President. All of the original cast, these new characters, and a few more minor players, make up Bloom County.

Review

I loved Bloom County in the 1980's and is still feels fresh reading it again now. All of the characters are a blast to read about. Berke Breathed has done not only a wonderful job creating stories that are fun to read, but drawing the characters so well. Mr. Breathed blends the political and environmental issues of the day with humor that enables the reader not only see his point of view, but to grasp and understand not only how foolish we can behave, but also how stupidly we can act.

Franklin is the best new character added as he rips through security systems hacking his way in causing trouble where ever he goes. He is a blast!

If anyone out there would like to sit down and spend some time laughing and thinking about how humans are influenced by all we see and hear, pick up a copy of 'Toons for Our Times. You will read it over and over again . . . I know I have.
