Bloom County comic strip

Synopsis

Penguin Dreams and Stranger Things is the third collection of Bloom County comic strips. The Sunday comic strips appear in color, but are clumped into two sections and do not follow the dailies in their designated spots, which can be a little confusing if the Sunday was in reference to the previous week’s happenings. All of the dailies appear in black and white. At the beginning of the book are six pages from Milo's photo album showing some of the photographs that he has taken on his travels through Bloom County. The artwork in these pictures is wonderful.

The following storylines appear in this book: Opus Looks for Mom in Antarctic, Survivalism, Bloom Tours, Tess Turbo Rock Video, Steve's Mom Pays a Visit, Caucus Time, Mrs. Whacker - The Axe Murderer, Meadow Party Convention in San Francisco, Bill the Cat Lives, The Prince (Michael Jackson) and the Pauper (Opus), Mister America Pageant and Bhagwan Bill.

Bloom County became very popular in the early 1980's. The characters that Berke Breathed created are a lot of fun to read about. They are: Steve Dallas - a machismo man who doesn't know how to take "No" for an answer, Bobbi - Milo and Binkley's school teacher who tells Steve "No," Milo Bloom - a young boy who writes for the Bloom Beacon and is politically conscious, Binkley - Milo's neurotic friend who is something of a girl, Cutter John - Bobbi's wheelchair-bound friend who is a Star Trek fan and a Viet Nam war veteran, Opus - Binkley overanxious penguin who sort of pretends he is human, and Bill the Cat - a scraggly, rock 'n' roll loving mess of a cat. All of these characters, and a few more minor players, make up Bloom County..

Review

When Bloom County became no more, I was saddened. Even though Berke Breathed is no longer creating this wonderful comic strip, having a little piece of this hilarious comic is something I will always treasure.

I have found over the years that I pull out these books and peruse them again and again, even though I have read them before. The interaction of Milo, Binkley and Opus has always brought me back for more. And I absolutely love Franklin and all the trouble he gets into hacking on his PC and his exploration into all types of sciences; like Chemistry and Astronomy.

You can't do much better than Bloom County for pages of laughs.
