Synopsis

Out of Picture: Art From the Outside Looking In - Volume 1 is a set of eleven short stories by Blue Sky Studio artists. The term "out of picture" is a film term that whatever it is has been cut out of the picture, often referred to as "OOPed."

Blue Sky Studio is a relatively new studio and has released some very successful computer animated films like Ice Age and Robots.

In this case, the artists of Blue Sky Studio were approached to create short stories never intended for film, but just to be what they are . . . fun little pieces of imagination. The artists at first took it lightly, and then once they saw what some of their fellow artists were coming up with, they synched down their belts and the competition really began. The results speak for themselves.

The book is composed of eleven short stories. Some are full and complete while others leave you hanging wondering what is to come. Some are penciled, some are inked, some are hand-painted . . . all are wonderful.

In the back of the book is a large section on how the stories were developed with early images. Following that is a section on Artist Biographies with a picture of each of the artists.

Review

I have always loved comic books and graphic novels. Gosh, I have always loved any type of animation whatsoever. When I first received the book from Villard, I just kind of glanced through it and thought, "Wow. There is some really cool stuff in here." When I finally sat down and read it, I was not disappointed.

Some of the stories were awesome, some disturbing, and some just weren't my thing, but I could still appreciate the artwork. For instance, who would ever think of drawing terrorists and cute and cuddly stuffed animals? David Gordon did in "The Wedding Present."

To me, the best story was "Four & Twenty Blackbirds" by Greg Couch. It is the story is about private eye "Little Jack" Horner who is looking for his partner's, Jack Nimble, killer. The pencil-work is spectacular and the story is a hoot.

Another story I really enjoyed was "Night School" by Nash Dunnigan. It is the story of the near future where the church has taken over the government and young kids that are religious fanatics terrorize neighborhoods preventing other children from going to a real school to be educated. I love the dark feel to this story and the theme also.

Overall, Out of Picture: Art From the Outside Looking In - Volume 1 is excellent and should not be missed by any lover of the slightly off. Fantastic!

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
