Synopsis

Bertha Snodgrass is a cute little girl who lives on a hidden island. One day, Edweard Snoop hops on a ferry and ends up on the island. His job is to put up postings about a big sale and auction for "negro" slaves. Bertha and Dr. Wong confront Edweard and are about to take him back to the mainland when the mayor, Alexander Hamilton Snodgrass, shows up. The men talk some business and hop on the ferry back to the mainland.

Stewart, a giant of a man who works for Dr. Wong, awaits the time he can give Edweard a potion that will kill him, but ends up drinking just a drop or two, so Edweard does not die, but is only a little groggy. Meanwhile, the mayor returns to the island and contacts Carter, a local rich man, and wants to know about the "thing." The things, as it turns out, is a large mechanical man.

Back on the mainland, Bertha has been secretly following Edweard as he staggers home to meet his boss, the slave auctioneer. They discover her and Bertha offers to buy a slave so she can set it free. But the money from her island is no good there, and she ends up helping the slave escape and they head back to the island. Things start to go hinky jinky as the robot gets loose, the mayor loses his memory, and the boss sends a ruthless bandit to get his slave back.

Review

The Lost Colony: The Snodgrass Conspiracy didn't grab me at first. I was so busy trying to figure out when the story took place and why a guy called another a "dude," that I was a little confused. I know that people didn't call other "dude" in the 1800's. But as the story progressed, I was finally able to put my worries aside and enjoy this tale of a strange nineteenth century island that isn't on the map.

The island is chocked full of interesting characters that you will both like and dislike. By the end of the story, when the robot was on the loose, I was enjoying the read greatly. But my confusion at the beginning of the story overshadowed the read. The island is a little confusing to understand, especially the little rock people. Are they magical, or do they even really exist? I don't actually know . . . Anyway, like I was saying, I enjoyed the second half of the book much more than the first half.

Overall, The Lost Colony: The Snodgrass Conspiracy is a good beginning to a strange series that has a lot of potential to entertain the reader. I look forward to reading the next book in this series, The Lost Colony: The Red Menace.

I rated this book a 7 out of 10.
