Synopsis

In 1753, in Paris, France,  Jean le Rond d'Alembert starts to explain to d'Eon how his sister, Lia, was able to climb to the sixth level. He calls upon the spirit of Eleanor and she shows d'Eon four cards that represent the past, the present, the future and present challenges. d'Alembert starts to explain the cards to d'Eon when a mouse spits a large egg at them. When d'Alembert catches the egg that has the word "Vitriol" printed on it, the egg cracks and explodes a gooey substance on his hand and half of his face. d'Alembert' hand appears to melt away while his face is covered with poetry. d'Eon attempts to stop more of the eggs, but he also loses a hand in the process. More mice appear and start spitting out a lot of the eggs.

The mice are under the control of sixth level poet Maspero. d'Alembert is finally able to read the word on the egg and realizes that the parts of their bodies that have touched the goo have gone under a fierce transformation. This substance uses a chemical from a sage's stone to make the transformation.

Soon, there is so much goo on the floor that the floor begins to transform also, turning soft and sagging downward. d'Eon, realizing that there isn't much time left before the building collapses on them so opens his shirt and carves some words on his chest. He is then able to change into the Sphinx, which he should not be able to do. d'Alembert realizes that d'Eon has just become the next poet.

Review

Le Chevalier d'Eon: Volume 5 did not rock like I thought it would. My main problem was the confusion I had while trying to figure out what was going on in the story. The whole bit about the four cards and what they meant was absolute gibberish to me. I even read that part again think that maybe I wasn't really paying attention, but I still couldn't understand what d'Alembert and d'Eon were talking about.

After having rated the last volume a ten our of ten, I was a little disappointed with this volume.

Now, for the good points. The artwork by Kiriko Yumeji is absolutely beautiful, as it always is. The story, although a little hard to follow, progresses nicely and I found myself shocked at the ending. The Comte de Saint-Germain rears his ugly head again and we learn how powerful he is when he confronts Emma. I just wish that the translation into English would have been worked on a little more so that a major portion of the book made more sense. I hate being confused because the translation isn't correct.

Overall, I still think that Le Chevalier d'Eon: Volume 5 is pretty great, but it sure wasn't on the same level as the previous book. I wonder what is going to happen next in Le Chevalier d'Eon: Volume 6?

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
