Synopsis

Odd Thomas is a nineteen-year old boy that lives in Pico Mundo, California. He works at the Pico Mundo Grill and makes the best pancakes in this medium-sized town of 40,000 people. He seems like your normal every-day type of guy until you realize that he has a special ability: he sees dead people. Not only does he see them, he helps them get even for the crime that was committed against them by using his Psychic Magnetism. With the aid of his gun-toting girlfriend, Stormy, they lend their advice to the local police department and help them solve crimes.

When a seven-year old boy is found murdered in his own house, Chief Porter of the Pico Mundo Police asks Odd to lend a hand. The boy had been found by his housekeeper, Sherry Sheldon, when she returned to the house from a trip to the grocery store. Sherry is Stormy's best friend and they grew up in an orphanage together.

When Odd arrives at the scene of the murder, he finds Stormy comforting her friend. Odd learns that Sherry has been receiving letters from a stalker for the last two months. The letters were created by cutting out alphabet letters from magazines and pasting them on the paper, like in old Hollywood mystery movies. Sherry is very upset about the death of the boy, but still has to go to work for the other family she is housekeeper for.

While visiting Sherry at the other house, Odd spots a strange van parked in the street. He confronts the stalker sitting inside the van and learns later that the guy's name is Kyle Bernshaw. When more letters arrive at three other houses that all have young children, Odd realized that this child-killer is creating a diversion. After Sherry loses her other job, Odd and Stormy come to the conclusion that the children were never really the target . . . Sherry is.

Review

In Odd We Trust is an interesting tale about a young man with special powers. I have never read one of Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas novels, so he was new to the character for me. I found it interesting that the police chief trusts a nineteen-year old to help him solve crimes. Besides that weird little fact, I found that I really liked the story.

The artwork by Queenie Chan was pretty good, although she needs to practice drawing vehicles.

I would have liked a little more history on Odd Thomas and learn how he received his powers. I would also like to know why the police chief lets Stormy carry around a gun. Maybe he doesn't know she has one, but a nineteen year old girl toting a piece around town doesn't seem very likely.

Still, the story is interesting and I quite enjoyed it. The only thing I would have wished for was for the story to be scarier. I mean, this is dean Koontz we are talking about. I have read some of his novels and they can be quite scary. This book wasn't scary at all, although I was worried about Sherry when she disappeared.

Overall, In Odd We Trust is a great little story that I enjoyed reading and I find myself hoping for more Odd Thomas manga in the future.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
