Synopsis

The Essential Calvin and Hobbes is a collection of Calvin and Hobbes comic strips. This book includes cartoons from Calvin and Hobbes and Something Under the Bed is Drooling. A color, twelve-page story appears in the beginning of the book. This little story is told in rhyme. The Sunday cartoons appear in color while the daily cartoons appear in black and white.

This collection contains the following storylines: principal's office, camping, swimming lessons, Calvin the onion, Susie's birthday party, school pictures, baby raccoon, the Transmogrifier, and the haircut. Most of the stories are just individual daily shots. This collection contains the first Calvin and Hobbes stories.

Calvin and Hobbes became very popular in the mid-1980's, and continued into the 1990's, until Bill Watterson decided that he was going to retire the comic strip. It was seen daily in hundred of newspapers and enjoyed by millions. Calvin is a quirky 6 years old boy who has a pet stuffed animal tiger names Hobbes. But to Calvin, Hobbes is alive. Together, they constantly get into mischief. Hobbes often acts as Calvin's conscious, but being a tiger, he also acts upon his whims. Calvin's parents can also be quite funny. Calvin always seems to be testing his mother. And Calvin's father's explanations of how things work are always hilarious. And then there is Calvin's arch nemesis, Susie. Usually innocent of all wrongdoing, Calvin loves to harass her. But she always beats Calvin in the end.

Review

It is great to see the evolution of Calvin and Hobbes in The Essential Calvin and Hobbes. At the beginning, the drawings are rough, but the character is pretty well developed. Calvin, right from the beginning, is trouble, and I love it. This kid and his stuffed tiger can really make me laugh. He does all of the stuff that you wish you could have done as a kid. His imagination is fantastic.

So, if you want to chuckle while reading about a mischievous little kid, Calvin is the one you should be reading about in The Essential Calvin and Hobbes.
