Synopsis

Seeking to steal the last remaining page of the Ildatch from the Mwellrets, acolytes of dark magic, Jair Ohmsford uses his magic, the wishsong, to make him invisible to their eyes. But when the page burns his hand, Jair's magic is disrupted and the lizard-like creatures attack. Somehow Jair uses his magic to bring forth the image of his dead friend, Garet Jax. When the image enveloped him, Jair became Garet Jax with all of this great fighting abilities and is able to defeat all of the creatures.

The next day, Jair and his sister, Brim, are in the Highlands of Leah and he tells her about this. He tells her how he changed the wishsong and how Garet Jax appeared. Brin warns him that the wishsong may be dangerous and that he should not use it anymore. Wanting to return home to Shady Vale, Jair begins the long journey on horseback. While asleep that night, the shade of Allanon pays him a visit. Allanon informs Jair that the Mwellrets have hired the Croton Witch and she has hunted down Jair's friends, Kimber and Cogline.

The Croton Witch is searching for the residing place of the Druid's Keep, Paranor, which Allanon hid away before he was killed. Allanon tells Jair that he must rescue his friends and prevent the Mwellrets from finding Paranor. Jair rides to the edge of the Wolfsktaag Mountains into the Gnome village of Quorin Abbas and convinces his old friend, Slanter, to track the Mwellrets. They find Kimber and Cogline's cabin and inside of it is Whisper, their moor cat.

Now a party of three, Whisper leads them to Kimber who is in a cave with a broken leg. Taking Kimber to be healed, they leave Whisper with Kimber while Jair and Slanter continue tracking the Mwellrets. They have to stop them from uncovering all of the secrets in the Druid's Keep. Later, when they are under attack again, Jair must decide whether he should user the wishsong again and risk losing himself in the magic.

Review

The Sword of Shannara has always stood out as my favorite Fantasy book of all time. I originally read it in high school a few years after it came out and quickly followed it with The Elfstones of Shannara. Unfortunately, The Wishsong of Shannara had not been published yet and I had to wait a few years, which was very hard to do, I'll tell you.

Images from this series have stayed in my mind for over 25 years. I still remember the dwarf swinging his double-edged battle axe and cleaving in half two goblins (or something) at the same time in a forest battle. Wow! As for Terry Brooks' first book written as a graphic novel, I loved the story and the artwork is wonderful. It really made me want to go back and read the original trilogy that I have loved for so long.

Robert Place Napton does an excellent job of taking Terry Brooks' writing and translating it onto graphic novel format. And the pencils of Edwin David really enhance the storytelling. Gosh, I sure hope that there are more Shannara graphic novels to follow. I would love to read them all. In the back of the book is a seven-page section on the Making of the Dark Wraith of Shannara, a seven-page section called Artist's Scrapbook, a six-page section on Penciling, Inking & Toning, and finally the first Chapter from the novel, The Wishsong of Shannara.

Having been a Shannara fan for so long, I really hope that Mr. Brooks decides to create more of his stories in this wonderful format. If so, I know that I will read them with great enthusiasm and hope for more.

Overall, Dark Wraith of Shannara is an excellent story that should not be missed by any lover of fantasy novels, and especially Shannara fans. Fantastic!

I rated this book a 9½ out of 10.
