Synopsis |
|
Cows of Our Planet
is the thirteenth collection of The Far Side comic strips. All comic
strips are in black and white. These are all single shots, not the
normal 4 panel comic strips. The Far Side is a humorous comic strip that
appeared in a multitude of newspapers daily. In the center of the book
are six colored pages
about Cows of Our Planet. Each page contains four images of the
strange cows that live on Earth . . . well, that live in Earth in Gary
Larson's mind. For example, there are images of the Tennessee big butt,
the Texas longnose, the Polynesian puffer cow, the Brahma belly, and
much, much more. Every Sunday comic strip has been water-colored and
gray washed.
The Far Side became very popular in the
early 1980's, and continued into the 1990's, until Gary Larson decided
that he was going to retire the comic strip. It was seen daily in
hundred of newspapers and enjoyed by millions. The Far Side is just as
the name imply...just on the far side of sane. Most of the strips
feature humans, but not all. If an animal is the main character, then
they are usually placed in the shoes of a human. Most of the Far Side
strips deal with the stupid things humans do in every day things. Other
strips deals with things that are just totally wacky. Either way, they
make fun of us and everything we do. And since it is human nature to
laugh at the misfortune of others . . . you will probably find this comic
strip to be very funny.

Review |
|
It has been a while since I sat down and
read any of Gary Larson's The Far Side. This comic strip used to be one
of my favorites, as I love the one line zingers. I had never read any of
the comic strips included in Cows
of Our Planet in the newspapers,
so these were all new to me. Although I found that I really enjoyed
reading this book, I discovered that a lot of them weren't as funny as
the ones Gary Larson created in his earlier years. Sure, some of them
made me smile. Some of them made me laugh out loud, but not as many as
in his previous books. There were a
few strips I could have chosen from to show above, but the one I chose
made me smile and then I started singing in my head. Yes, the comic
strip refers to the classic movie, The Sound of Music, and the
song by Julie Andrews, "My Favorite Things." As I am writing this
review, I just had to put the song on to listen to it. I don't know who
the guy was that will killed in the shown strip, but I'm sure he has
some nice things.
Cows of Our Planet
contains a wonderful collection of comic strips from the warped and
twisted mind of its creator. I can only heap praise upon Gary Larson for
coming up with such a wonderful premise as The Far Side. It will always
remain, in my mind, as one of the funniest comic strips to ever grace
the pages of a newspaper.
So, if you are looking for something
entertaining to read, pick up a copy of
Cows of Our Planet
and be prepared for something that can turn your moooooood around. |
